Title: Coup Stick Project

1
Coup Stick Project
  • By Tyler Truitt

2
The Purpose Of A Coup Stick
  • Coup sticks were used to show bravery
  • There were many ways to show bravery
  • A warrior might hit an enemy with the stick or he
might steal an enemy horse or capture an enemy
    tepee
  • The more symbols of bravery a warrior has on his
coup stick the more he is respected

3
Native Americans admired using coup sticks more
than killing enemies
  • Native Americans thought being brave was better
    than killing enemies
  • They thought it was better because it took more
courage to get close enough to touch an enemy
than it did to kill them from far away

4
The Creation Of A Coup Stick
  • A coup stick may have beads, feathers, paintings
    or slits in the wood
  • These all mean different things
  • They can symbolize friends and family members,
heritage, or the number of brave things you have
    done

5
Coup Sticks Today
  • Today coup sticks are in museums to teach people
    about Native Americans
  • You can learn a lot about different tribes and
their hobbies from their coup sticks because each
tribe decorates their coup stick differently
  • Native Americans use them in powwows which are
    ceremonial dances or celebrations

6
Instead of a coup stick
  • Native Americans should mark there tepees instead
of their coup sticks that way their less likely
to loose their records of courageous deeds done
  • It is much harder to loose a tepee than a coup
    stick

7
My own coup stick
  • If I was going to make my own coup stick I would
make it long so I didnt have to get as close to
    an enemy
  • I would also have a lot of decorations that
    represent my family members
