Rule of 5s in a Nutshell!
Proceed direct to the 264 radial 27 DME fix and
hold. Oh, and your GPS is OTS!!! Youre
currently at the 255/24. Follow AFM 11-217 for
the Fix to Fix procedures. We can use the rule of
5s as a technique to shack our fix.
  1. Divide your desired fixs DME by 5. This becomes
    your scale. Ex 27/5 5 Place the scale on the
    top half of the displaced course indicator.
  2. Determine how far till you reach your fix.
    Desired Fix-Current Position Ex 27-24 3
  3. Turn to place the desired distance to travel
    under the upper lubber line. As the course comes
    across and you approach the fix the scale should
    correct itself. I.E. 2nm from the fix the 2
    should be under the lubber line, 1nmetc., until
    you are at your fix and the course is centered.
  4. Correct your heading according to your distance
    from the fix and the scale on the course
    deviation indicator until you shack the fix.
    Winds or allowing your heading to drift will
    cause you to have to reevaluate your heading.
    Continually updating your heading according to
    your distance and the course will assure you
    shack it every time.

  • Ensure you have the desired course or radial
    based on your position dialed into the course
    selector.
  • This technique will generally work once the
    course is alive or w/n approx 10nm.
  • Only use the top half of the deviation bar. 0 is
    at the bottom where the deviation circles are
    located.
