Title: DOMESTIC POLICY CRIME AND DRUGS

1
DOMESTIC POLICY CRIME AND DRUGS
  • BY DYLON LARSEN

2
IssuesCrime in America
  • In 2006 there were 17,034 murders about one per
    17,500
  • residents. An increase of 1.6 from the
    previous year.
  • With Violent crimes Increasing by 1.9 from the
    previous year.
  • According to the FBI uniform crime report about
11.4 million crimes were documented in 2006
  • 90 of these crimes were property damage such as
    burglary or car theft.
  • 10 were violent crimes such as rape, robbery
    aggravated assault.

3
Crowded prisons
  • In order to decrees the rate of crime the
government enacted the law enforcement act that
made sentences longer and required life in prison
    after getting 3 felonies.
  • In 2006 there were over 2.25 million people in
jail and increase of 3 from the previous year.
  • While women in prison jumped almost 5 a trend
that has been increasing in the last 5 years.
  • Many Americans believe that the unfair
imprisonment and excessively long punishments are
    a waste of taxpayer money.
  • It costs 40,000 dollars to imprison one person
    for a year.

4
Drugs and Guns
  • The use and sale of illegal drugs such as
    cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin contributes
    greatly to violent crime.
  • Along with the sale of drugs comes violent gun
crimes and sales of illegal weapons. To stop the
gun crimes the government made the sale of
    automatic weapons to be illegal.
  • Columbians dominated the drug market in the 1980s
and 1990s but now the Mexican cartel dominates
have demanded more law enforcement along the
    borders and drug trafficking.
  • The violence associated with is not caused by
drugs themselves but the illegal activity that
    surrounds there sale and consumptions
  • Many experts believe that legalization of certain
drugs then drug related thefts and crimes would
    decline.

5
Online Crime
  • As the internet became more popular and a part of
our daily lives in the late 1990s opened a
window for people to commit new crimes.
  • Such as identity theft, fraud, credit card scams
and sex crimes especially against vulnerable
children . Online crimes alone have there own
special force of law enforcement to bust
    criminals

6
Policy solutions
  • The policy solutions being utilized today are
  • Offering rehabilitation to any offender with drug
    related crimes
  • Allowing prisoners to take college courses or
    learn a trade
  • Offering Probation and diversion services
  • Increasing law enforcement
  • Harsher punishments

7
Impact of these Solutions
  • These solutions have made a large impact on
society but it still isnt enough .
  • They enacted the law enforcement act that helped
out some but it cause more problems for the
    prison and court systems.
  • The rehabilitation programs have made a slight
impact but with lack of funding and facilities
many criminals are just waiting in jail until
they can get into a treatment program.
  • Educating the criminals have also helped them get
employed when they are released from
    incarceration.

8
Impact on the Government
  • The policy has been very expensive and has cost
    the government multi millions.
  • The state and federal prisons have become
overcrowded witch causes local jails to become
    overcrowded.
  • Overcrowding causes many of problems in the
prisons such as an increase in violence and
riots, and a shortage on staff.
  • Federal funds are running out for the prisons
witch result in poor living conditions for the
    prisoners.

9
Opinion on the solution
  • I believe that the governed is trying and doing a
good job in most places but not hard enough or
in the right places. They need to quit wasting so
much time busting low level street dealers and
spend more time busting the main cartel, murders,
    and rapists.
  • Filling our prison with people who are drug
attics isn't what we should be doing instead of
incarserating them we need to offer them
rehabilitation and strict probation . If they
dont want to do so or follow the rules then lock
    them up .
  • The government also needs to legalize and tax
marijuana and quit prosecuting people with
marijuana charges . If we were to legalize
marijuana it would create a 7 trillion dollar
industry and with that tax money alone we could
provide all the facilities and workers to
actually rehabilitate our criminals in a humane
matter and create a better society.
  • Getting our society free from drugs would make
the untited states a much better place to live
and the crime rate would dramatically decrease.
