Title: Antarctic meteorology, sea ice, oceanography, etc' status and plans for data management at the Arcti

1
Antarctic meteorology, sea ice, oceanography,
etc. status and plans for data management at
the Arctic and Arctic and Antarctic Research
Institute7th JCADM meeting, Brussels, 30 June
6 July
  • Viktor Lagun , Vasily Smolyanitsky,
  • Aleksandr Klepikov and
  • Nikolai Antipov

2
Some facts
  • From 1999 carried out within the Federal
Programme World Ocean, Antarctic Research and
    Investigation Sub-programme
  • Sub-programme planned for 1999-2012
  • More than 30 institutions involved from 8
    ministries including Rosgidromet and Russian
    Academy of Science
  • Head institute AARI (several scientific
    departments oceanographic, meteorology, sea ice,
polar geography, geophysics, WDC-B, etc. and RAE)
  • 54 separate projects including
  • Fundamental research (19)
  • Scientific and applied investigations (8)
  • Environmental monitoring (11)
  • Environmental protection (8)
  • Logistics (9)
  • We are in a process of developing NADC, we still
do not use DIFs for Antarctic (but do use for
    the Arctic !)
  • Much information is now posted at internet
    http//www.aari.nw.ru/south

3
(No Transcript)
4
Documents general and official documentation,
quarterly bulletin.
5
descriptive information on active and inactive
Russian (Soviet) stations including geographical
description
6
photographic material for each station, some
philately
7
Contact persons science, logistics (Russian
Antarctic Expedition), data management, web.
8
On-line access to meteorological, sea ice and
oceanographic (meta)data
  • Stored in MySQL data base
  • Search provided by SQL-server
  • User interface written in ASP, JavaScript
  • Browsing utilizes JavaScript, Java-class
  • Further intention ArcIMS ? ArcGIS ?

9
Meteorology1) extensive data catalogue of
Russian Antarctic Meteorological data .
10
.including list of Russian (Soviet) Antarctic
stations, parameters observed.
11
on-line access to stations data (monthly
averaged) and temporal graphs...
12
2) Sea IceWMO project Global Digital Sea Ice
Data Bank (in-cooperation with USA NSIDC)
  • We have two web-sites
  • at AARI - http//www.aari.nw.ru/gdsidb
  • At NSIDC http//nsidc.org/noaa/gdsidb
  • Ice charts (total concentration and stages of ice
development) stored in raster SIGRID (WMO, 1989)
    format
  • Ice charts for Antarctic were submitted by two
    operative centers
  • USA National Ice Center weekly charts for
1973-1994), plans are for 1995-present moment
  • Russian Federation 10-days ice charts for
    1971-1991
  • Further intentions SIGRID-3, ASPect project
    shipborne data

13
on-line access is provided to all ice charts as
GIFs images in user-friendly interface
NIC chart, double window
AARI ice chart
14
on-line access is also provided to all original
ice charts in SIGRID format (via Java-class)
NIC ice chart
AARI ice chart
15
some climatic statistics based on GDSIDB data.
Ice extent trend fron 1973
Multiannual statistics for the sea ice total
concentration for 1973-1991 upper left - robust
mean, upper right - interquartile range, lower
left - quantile 95, lower right - enthropy
values.
16
3) Oceanography
  • Presently on-line access to meta data on
    oceanographic observations (with complete QC)
from AARI research vessels for 19562003
  • Includes information for 3460 stations (date,
coordinates, ships code, station number, depth,
number of levels, parameters observed T, S, O2,
    NO3, NO2, P, Si, PH)
  • Now stored in MySQL DB, SQL server links tabular
interface with DB, search criteria are formed by
    the user
  • Result is generated as ASCII .txt file
  • Further intentions ArcIMS ?, ArcGIS ?

17
.general view of tabular interface
18
.different search criteria
19
.future plans for oceanographyalso for
meteorology, sea ice et al under uniform software
umbrella
  • We need to
  • choose IS or GIS (?) for Antarctic web-portal
    for historical and operational meteorology,
oceanography, sea ice possibly based on ArcIms,
    Oracle DB
  • include other environmental parameters into IS
    biology, geology, geography
  • start DIF description
