HSPA
  • Mathematics
  • Language Arts Literacy
  • Science

2
HSPA Overview
  • The HSPA serves the assessment needs of the
    States public schools.
  • The federal law requires states to use tests as a
way of determining the performance levels of the
    schools.
  • The tests are designed to assess how well
students are learning the knowledge and skills
called for by the States standards.
  • Passing the HSPA (or SRA) is a graduation
    requirement.

3
HSPA Overview
  • The HSPA is designed to give your school
information about how well students are achieving
in the areas required by the States Core
    Curriculum Content Standards (CCCS).
  • The CCCS determine what students should know and
be able to do at a certain grade level.
  • The CCCS were developed by teachers and other
education professionals from New Jersey. Theu
    were recently updated in 2008

11
Math Assessment Overview
  • The HSPA has two major types of questions.
  • Multiple choice the students are asked to
choose one correct answer from among four
    choices.
  • Multiple choice questions add much to the
reliability and consistency of the test because
many good questions that focus on a broad range
of skills can be answered in a short span of
    time.
  • MC questions are objective and do not require
    scoring by trained professionals.

12
Math Assessment Overview
  • The second type of question is the open-ended
    question.
  • Students will answer these questions with short
    or long written responses.
  • The advantage of this type of question is that it
allows the children to express what they know
about each question in their own words.
  • Students may also present their response using
    diagrams, graphics, and/or pictures.
  • New Jersey has many years of experience in
developing and scoring this type of question.

13
Test Format
  • There are
  • Four
  • Forty minute sections
  • Each section contains
  • 10 Multiple Choice
  • 2 Open Ended
  • Total number of points
  • Raw score 48
  • Raw score is converted to a scale score

14
Math Assessment Overview
  • 15 (7) of the points on the HSPA assess Number
    and Numerical Operations
  • 25 (12) of the points on the HSPA assess
    Geometry and Measurement
  • 30 (14) of the points on the HSPA assess
    Patterns and Algebra
  • 30 (15) of the points on the HSPA assess Data
    Analysis, Probability, and Discrete Mathematics

Writing
  • Persuasive Prompt

Students will read a writing situation and answer
the writing task.

To Score a 4...
  • Essay should include
  • Characters
  • Setting
  • Plot
  • Problem/Conflict
  • Dialogue
  • Resolution/ Outcome
  • It is always BEST to add, This reminds me of a
    time when.

Reading
Narrative Passage
Persuasive Passage
The passage size can range from 3,100 to 5,000
words.
There are 10 multiple choice questions and 2 open
ended questions for each passage.
45 / 50 Minutes
20
Reading
The 11 Skills Necessary to Master the Reading
Section
1. Recognition of central idea or theme
2. Recognition of details that support the main
idea
3. Extrapolation of information
4. Paraphrase, retell, or interpret meanings of
words and sentences
5. Recognition of organizational structure of
text
6. Recognition of a purpose for reading
7. Becoming an active reader through Questioning
8. Make tentative predictions of meanings
9. Distinguishing fact from opinion
10. Make judgments and draw conclusions
11. Interpretation of figurative language,
literary devices

Science
  • GOAL Improve Student Achievement in
    Science!!
  • NJ Dept of Education created a way to measure
    such achievement.
  • Its called THE END OF COURSE ASSESSMENT IN
    BIOLOGY

22
Two Biology Assessments
  • 1. EOC in Biology
  • 72 Multiple Choice Questions
  • 2 HOURS
  • 4 Sections consisting of 18 questions
  • 2. Performance Assessment
  • Scenario Format
  • Includes science related issues, experimental
    write-up, data charts, graphs
  • Students will possibly need to generate graphs
from data, set up experiments, draw conclusions
  • This is a pen and pencil assessment
  • 90 MINUTES

23
WHO TAKES THE ASSESSMENT?
  • Any student CURRENTLY taking any first level
BIOLOGY course will take the assessment. (Lab
Biology, Principles of Lab Biology, Honors Lab
    Biology)

24
When?
  • May 12, 2009 (Tuesday)
  • Performance Assessment
  • May 18, 2009 (Monday)
  • EOC in BIOLOGY
  • 72 Multiple Choice Questions
    Make-up May 21, 2009

25
Test Construction
  • 70 Scientific Processes
  • 10 Science and Society (Human Impact)
  • 10 Mathematical Applications
  • 10 Knowledge/Factual Recall
  • Thus, almost ¾ of the test content will measure
    student achievement of scientific processes!!!!!!

26
  • The HSPA is administered in March (and October)
  • The questions on the HSPA can contain
items/concepts learned prior (in other grade
    levels)
  • The HSPA is not a diagnostic test but a test to
measure how well the students achieved the NJ
    CCCS.

27
Our Goals...
  • To involve every department
  • in the preparation of our students.
  • To improve HSPA scores.
  • To achieve and go above and beyond
  • our No Child Left Behind Requirements.

28
Get Ready, Because...
The HSPA is coming!!! The HSPA is coming!!!
