  • Determine the easiest box to complete.
  • Determine the most difficult box to complete.
  • Consider If given one extra chance to roll what
is needed, would this increase, decrease, or
    maintain probability?

Calculator Simulation Or WAR
11
Divide and Conquer
  • WAR OBJECTIVE
  • 2 players
  • Find the likelihood of WAR
  • Discover the probability of a double-WAR
  • Determine how many cards can beat a 4. What about
    a Jack?
  • In the four player version, what is the
    likelihood of a four-way war?
  • Why does the winner, win?
  • Why does the loser, lose?
  • CALCULATOR
  • SIMULATION OBJECTIVE
  • 3 players
  • TI 83/84 calculator
  • Follow posted instructions from Texas
    Instruments.
  • Try different simulations
  • Question Is this tool useful in the discovery
    of probability?

ONLINE INVESTIGATION
14
ONLINE OBJECTIVE
  • 5 players
  • 5 computers
  • Click on indicated links
  • Investigate activities
  • Write up whatever your teacher wants you to in
    regard to this activity!

15
  • Probability Simulation

Stick or Switch Investigate probabilities of
sticking with a decision, or switching.
Box Model Randomly selects and displays draws
from a box.
Coin Tossing Explore probability concepts by
simulating repeated coin tosses.
Hamlet Happens Verify that rare events happen
by drawing letters from a box.
Spinners Work with spinners to learn about
numbers and probabilities.
16
FUN INVESTIGATION LINKS
  • follow the story
  • yahtzee simulation
  • BBC Game Wheel

REAL Probability Games
19
  • DISCLAIMER
  • Casino game names can be
  • replaced with alternatives for those who have an
aversion for the sinful and for those with

SLOTS
POKER
ROULETTE
KENO

WHY?
  • Poker and Black Jack deal with card probability
    and adding the multi-deck aspect.
  • Slot machines and the wheel of fortune deal with
    spinner probability
  • Craps and roulette have the dice as an additional
    element
  • Keno is interesting and frequency might be
    something to investigate here.

22
GOALS
  • To find relationships between games and
    mathematics
  • Gain technical vocabulary
  • Data collection and presentation
  • Using different vehicles to gain knowledge about
    probability
  • Ultimately, to have fun while doing math
  • SIDE NOTE All games chosen have online or
computer versions. Depending on how far you want
    to take the technology aspect.
