- 1a. What type/genre of music do you most enjoy
playing? - 1b. Please underline or highlight your choice
More Pops More Classical Even Mix of Both - 2. Is there other music, currently not being
performed, that you would like to perform? I
cannot name specific repetoire, but I would like
to perform pieces involving smaller groups such
as winds and percussion, or strings with a few
winds. Perhaps music that is infrequently heard
with combinations of different instruments. This
could also raise the performance level because
players would have to be more responsible. The
orchestra plays at such a loud volume, it's easy
to hide bad tone quality, pitch, and stamina.
Maybe that's why players think they cannot
practice between rehearsals and still get by - 3. Are you interested in getting to know members
of the orchestra through social events? I'd like
to get to know more members of the orchestra, but
I have little time available right now for social
commitments. - 4. Would you be interested in increasing the
number of concert performances throughout the
season? Maybe during the regular season, but not
the summer. - 5a. The board is currently considering moving our
performance venues to more prestigious
(Harrisburg) locations/facilities. Do you think
this is a good idea and please suggest any venues
where you would like to perform? Yes, Harrisburg
locations would be good. Harrisburg Community
College would be a good location with accessible
parking. But, I don't care to travel outside the
immediate Central Pa area. I'm glad we no longer
play a concert in Ephrata. - 5b. If you would like to play at more prestigious
venues, how would you be willing to contribute?
If money is a factor, I would be willing to
contribute. - 6. What are some ways we could increase
attendance at our concerts? Involve children and
their parents -- perhaps a children's concert
where orchestra members show off their
instruments Provide publicity material to
retirement home/assisted living residents or
their social directors. Fry Village, Country
Meadows, or the Masonic Village have their own
vans. Sunday afternoon concerts would attract
more elderly music lovers! - 7. Any additional ideas/suggestions? Sectional
rehearsals are good - Rehearsal facilities at
Hershey High are great! - Selection of music is
great! (except for Johnny Quest!!, ha ,ha) We
have an dynamic conductor who knows how to
rehearse. On the negative side, our rhythm
section is not tight, and our players do not
follow the stick. Even when we play familiar
music, downbeats come early or late. Maybe some
time could be spent on rhythmical warmups in
addition to our intonation exercises. I enjoy
playing with CPS - I like playing new music -- I
wish the quality of our playing would improve.

5Name Judy Blazi Instrument Violin Yrs w/ CPS ?
- 5 - Yes, I believe changing where we perform our
concerts could possibly draw a new or larger
audience. I have always felt the Hershey
Symphony gets their large following mainly
because they perform at the Hershey Theater which
is a huge draw. The Harrisburg Symphony has the
Forum. I'm not sure I have any great ideas of
where, but I wonder if HACC might offer an
option? I work at HACC and know we checked with
them before but they were already booked in
advance. It might be something to look into
though for the future. Just a thought. -
- 6 - I wonder if coming up with some kind of
advertisement/catch phrase attached to our
symphony might help. We are the Central
Pennsylvania Symphony, but honestly whenever I
tell people the name of our symphony, it seems
the typical response is that they haven't heard
of us. I was thinking that emphasizing something
on the line of this symphony "belonging" to
Central Pennsylvania and building that angle up
to people might catch their attention more. The
emphasis could be on being the symphony of choice
for all of central Pennsylvania! We are "their"
symphony and want "their" support! Coming up
with some kind of phrase or motto could
immediately make people think and know of our
symphony. Then of course more advertising would
help too. I hope you are following what I'm
trying to say here. It is hard to explain in an
e-mail. Those are my thoughts for what it is
worth. -
- The only other comment I have is about our
Dessert and Dance gala. I really try to
advertise and get people to go to this concert
every year. I build it up and tell them how much
fun it is, etc. For the most part, they do
become very interested and ask a lot of
questions. I always think I almost have them
hooked and then they ask what the price is.
That's it! Most of the time as soon as they hear
the price, they say it is just too expensive. We
realize what it costs for an orchestra to do this
type of gala, but they see it from their
perspective. For the younger people, they are
looking at a 110 night just to go, then paying
for a babysitter, drinks, etc. That is probably
at least 150 for one night out for them as a
couple! Many others think they would enjoy it
but aren't big dancers. They feel it is too much
money to spend if they aren't even going to
dance. Most feel it is too expensive and they
will end up not buying tickets because of that.
I just wanted to pass that on even though I doubt
that there is a real answer to that problem. It
might be worth looking into though to see if
there is any way possible we can get the cost
down to gain more audience. -
- That's it! Thank you for letting me pass on my
thoughts. I appreciate the involvement.

4 Yrs. w/ CPS (I think)
- 1a. What type/genre of music do you most enjoy
playing? Big Band and Musicals - 1b. Please underline or highlight your
choice More Pops More Classical Even
Mix of Both - 2. Is there other music, currently not being
performed, that you would like to perform? -
- 3. Are you interested in getting to know members
of the orchestra through social events? Party???
Sure! J - 4. Would you be interested in increasing the
number of concert performances throughout the
season? Yes. I think we should be performing
each program at least twice if possible. Once at
a school and once at a performance venue. -
- 5a. The board is currently considering moving
our performance venues to more prestigious (Harris
burg) locations/facilities. Do you think this is
a good idea and please suggest any venues where
you would like to perform? Its an EXCELLENT
idea, although I dont have a clue where. If I
were looking for a good concert in Harrisburg,
Id look at the Forum or the Whitaker Center. I
cant think of any other place. -
- 5b. If you would like to play at more
prestigious venues, how would you be willing to
contribute? Id practice hard and come to all
the rehearsals. J OK, I suppose you want money.
I really dont want to pay to play. Im terrible
at sales and suck at soliciting donations. -
- 6. What are some ways we could increase
attendance at our concerts? Work with kids and
animals! Well, I guess we have enough animals so
kids would definitely help. Concerto contests for
various age groups. Clinics for school
orchestras. Extra concerts at High Schools
sponsored by the HS. Childrens concerts.
Education. Advertising. No offense but the
posters that Ive seen do not advertise quality.
Id be willing to help. If you dont have any
graphic artists in the orchestra, Ive done some
graphic design. -
- 7. Any additional ideas/suggestions? How about
a cocktail party fund raiser with a jazz combo
jam session featuring members of the orchestra? I
happened to know we have a drummer, bass player,
pianist, and several good instrumental soloists
not to mention a singer or two. Show a different
side of the orchestra. An outdoor pops concert
would be great if our season were longer into the
spring or started earlier in late summer.
Reservoir park is looking for entertainment. They
have a beautiful outdoor amphitheater. -

- 1a. I like to play a lot of different types of
music. Basically, whatever makes us sound good! - 1b. I guess an even mix of both, maybe slightly
weighted towards classical.2. Can't think of
any - 3. Sure! It's hard because everyone already has
full schedules - and I can't make it out after
rehearsals on Thursday nights. - 4. Sure.
- 5a. Yes! Fantastic idea! I know the Whitaker
has already come up and I think that would be
great! I'm sorry I don't know of any other
locations.5b. Does it require lots of money? I
can try to recruit more advertisers for our
program. I can increase my annual contribution. - 6. Get some of our members off their behinds
and get them to help get the word out! (This is
confidential, right?) -) - 7. I think it's great that this committee was
formed to address these issues. I hope lots of
good stuff comes of it!

Perhaps we could do a few chamber ensemble

our performance venues to more prestigious (Harris

a good idea and please suggest any venues where
you would like to perform?I think it's a decent
idea. I also like performing in the
Hershey/Hummelstown area too, though. It's good
to be able to give the concert experience to
people who can't make it into Harrisburg.
5b. If you would like to play at more

- 2. Is there other music, currently not being
performed, that you would like to perform? - Jazz/blues arrangements for orchestra (perhaps
featuring a vocalist or a sax, clarinet or
trumpet soloist). - The Horn Quartet by Heinrich Hubler ("Konzert fur
4 Horner in F Orchester"(it would require hard
work/extra rehearsal time from the entire horn
section to be successful - as well as an
"approval audition" from Greg). We have the horn
parts. - More of a dance/ballet theme - - - - Invite a
local dance group/troupe (high school/college/prof
essional) to perform with the orchestra
(Example The Movement Laboratory in Lebanon.
The dancers are quite young, but are very
professional and love the opportunity to perform
- - ask Bill Ruhl). - 3. Are you interested in getting to know members
of the orchestra through social events? Yes.
It's just a matter of timing/coordinating
schedules. -
- 4. Would you be interested in increasing the
number of concert performances throughout the
season? Possibly - more rehearsal time would
be needed. -
- 5a. The board is currently considering moving
our performance venues to more prestigious (Harris
burg) locations/facilities. Do you think this is
a good idea and please suggest any venues where
you would like to perform? - Yes, it would be a good idea.
- The Whitaker Center is a nice intimate venue for
the orchestra. - The Forum is a beautiful location as well (not
sure of the cost however). - OR outdoors along the riverfront.
- 5b. If you would like to play at more
prestigious venues, how would you be willing to
contribute? Not sure?? - - Solicite donations??
Practice more!!

CPS - 2
- 1a. What type/genre of music do you most enjoy
playing? Mozart, Bach, Brahms, Beethoven Some
"lesser known" or more "moden" pieces here and
there are fun to learn and sometimes a challenge
to play. 1b. Please underline or highlight your
choice More Classical!!! - 2. Is there other music, currently not being
performed, that you would like to perform? It
would be awesome to do a "big" work with the
Harrisburg Choral Society John Rutter's
Magnificat / Gloria / Requiem BRAHMS REQUIEM!!!
Poulenc Gloria It would be really cool to pull
something off like on the John Pattitucci CD I
let Greg borrow.....orchestra with Jazz Bass solo
- very moden/jazzy - 3. Are you interested in getting to know members
of the orchestra through social events? Yes - a
Season Ending picnic perhaps? I could bring
speakers/ mics and DJ - provide Mics for
speaches? That might be something cheap - make it
pot luck - or 10 donation? - 4. Would you be interested in increasing the
number of concert performances throughout the
season? Yes - by about one or two. Maybe add a
"special" All Mozart Bach Brandenburgs All Movie
Scores - 5a. The board is currently considering moving our
performance venues to more prestigious
(Harrisburg) locations/facilities. Do you think
this is a good idea and please suggest any venues
where you would like to perform? I think this is
a great idea however, I understand is a huge
issue here. I wonder if there are any large
churches that would "host" our concerts for free?
- 5b. If you would like to play at more prestigious
venues, how would you be willing to contribute? A
couple of years ago Hershey Symphony imposed a
40 "Dues" that each member had to play to be
eligible to play for the season. Everyone griped
about it but in the end, I think it was very
smart and after a year or two, people got used to
the "donation - 6. What are some ways we could increase
attendance at our concerts? I think we all
(myself included) needs to be our own
advertisement in really "hyping up" the area
about our orchestra and the concerts we present.
Word of mouth is the biggest help with something
like this when we don't have a ton of money to
use for advertising. With that said, I wonder if
there would be a way to have more "professional"
looking flyers for our concerts. Don't get me
wrong, Bill does a great job but image is also
very important and a professional, designed
program might entice more attendees?? - 7. Any additional ideas/suggestions?

other music, currently not being performed, that
you would like to perform? As mentioned below,
choral works with Harrisburg Choral Society or
other choral groups. 3. Are you interested
in getting to know members of the orchestra
through social events? Yes. 4. Would you
be interested in increasing the number of concert
performances throughout the season? I am not
certain whether you mean additional concerts or
more performances of the four we now do. Frankly,
I like things the way they are now. It isnt
because I dont like change. It is because my
life is delicately balanced because I play in
several music groups, and the way the schedule is
now, I have relatively few conflicts. Most
especially, I would like to avoid conflicts with
the West Shore Symphony (which I play in) and the
Harrisburg Symphony (whose concerts I attend). I
also sometimes play with Center Stage
Opera.Additionally, during the summer I play in
two community bands, so I would really not like
any more concerts in summer. I appreciate the
long break we now have. 5a. The board is
currently considering moving our performance
venues to more prestigious (Harrisburg)
locations/facilities. Do you think this is a
good idea and please suggest any venues where you
would like to perform?Maybe. I would worry
about attendance, although once the word got out,
we might attract a good audience. 5b. If you
would like to play at more prestigious venues,
how would you be willing to contribute? Maybe
help with setup, help with editing or
proofreading for advertising or programs. 6.
What are some ways we could increase attendance
at our concerts?More ads in newspapers
(especially the Patriot-News), local magazines
and newsletters, radio. Ticket giveaways. 7.
Any additional ideas/suggestions?We now play
two classical concerts and two pops concerts.
Maybe we could drop one of the pops for an
additional classical. I am counting the Christmas
concert as pops. I have really enjoyed our
collaboration with the Harrisburg Choral Society,
but maybe we dont have to do a Christmas concert
every year.Maybe we could have other choral
collaborations as well.

Mix of Both - 2. Is there other music, currently not being
performed, that you would like gtto perform? How
about a Haydn symphony? Something 20th century
that would be reasonable for us to attempt?
Feature a wind group and a string group on the
same program as we did with the Dvorak
senerenade. A large ensemble like Strass serenade
for winds or the Mozart serenade for 13
instruments. - 3. Are you interested in getting to know members
of the orchestra through gtsocial events? Yes. I
would enjoy going to the Warwick more often after
rehearsals, but having a drink and then driving
to Carlisle is not ideal. I have come to a few
social events a couple of years ago but not many
members came. - gt4. Would you be interested in increasing the
number of concert performances gtthroughout the
season? I don't think so. I'm not sure there is
adequate time to prepare for another--maybe there
could be two concerts after the February fund
raiser. Maybe one in early April and one in late
May. - 5a. The board is currently considering moving our
performance venues to gtmore prestigious
(Harrisburg) locations/facilities. Do you think
this is a good gtidea and please suggest any
venues where you would like to perform? Good
idea. Also, I recall that someone mentioned a
large church in Hershey that has good acoustics. - gt5b. If you would like to play at more
prestigious venues, how would you be gtwilling to
contribute? How would I be able to contribute? Do
you mean make a contribution to the orchestra? I
would be willing to do that, but I"m afraid not
everybody would be willing or perhaps not able to
donate. - 6. What are some ways we could increase
attendance at our concerts? Another location
might help. No one from Carlisle finds the
Hummelstown location attractive enough to come. A
trip to Harrisburg would be more attractive, and
even then some people are reluctant to travel
even 20 miles from Carlisle if it's not the
Harrisburg Symphony. I think the orchestra has to
build its audience in the Hershey-Hummelstown,
Ephrata area. - 7. Any additional ideas/suggestions? I will be
frank and suggest that the orchestra needs a very
strong concertmaster and the strings need either
more individual practice or more string
sectionals. Since it's not likely there will be
more individual practice, sectionals might be the
answer. The winds could benefit from sectionals
as well.

Would you be interested in increasing the number

. Do you think this is a good idea and please
suggest any venues where you would like to
perform? Until the CPSO improves musically I
do not think wider exposure is a good
idea. Sorry to have to say that. Some
thoughts, sent with the very best
intentions The greatest blessings of the CPSO
are (1) our extremely gifted and personable music
director and (2) the amazing devotion of the
players to the ensemble (reflected in their
attendance and commuting). The greatest
liabilities are (1) low performance ability in
glaringly obvious places in the orchestra, (2)
low expectations for private musical practice and
preparation of our members (3) lack of
leverage in changing this situation. Best
solution Mount a capital fund raising campaign
for the orchestra to support the modest payment
of all members. Change the atmosphere of
rehearsals to emphasize commitment, energy, and
continued improvement. Adopt an every-three-year
audition and re-audition process from top to
bottom, and have the auditions/re-auditions judged
by the music director, a small elected committee
from within the orchestra, and an outside, paid
orchestral expert with vote (the expert to
change each three years). Band-aid solution
Continue on an all-volunteer basis, but
announce auditions/re-auditions for September,
2007 - top to bottom - and at the same time be
encouraging to the membership about this
process. Appoint a small committee within the
orchestra to meet in total confidential
circumstances, and analyze the musical
contributions of every present member, and then
advertise the auditions as widely as possible,
inviting candidates from the outside to fill
spots that the confidential committee identifies
as in need of change. Creative solution
transform the CPSO into a chamber
orchestra strings, winds (including trumpets) in
pairs, timpani, and Baroque/Classical keyboard.
Hire trombones, tuba, color-winds on an ad hoc
basis, concert by concert -- and no guarantees
whatsoever to freelancers. Focus on transforming
the strings with new blood and new first chair
leadership. Get out of the business of playing
ballroom dances, movie scores, high-school level
arrangements, and other repertoire of that
sort. Ill-advised solution pay first chairs
only. First chairs in general are already playing
at a high level -- with obvious and
glaring exceptions. These musicians will not
necessarily play any better or more faithfully
with modest payment, and others will resent
this hierarchy in the context of the CPSO's
ethos. 5b. If you would like to play at more
prestigious venues, how would you be willing to
contribute? Pre-mature question (see above).
6. What are some ways we could increase
attendance at our concerts? 7. Any additional
ideas/suggestions?

to know members of the orchestra through social
events? Yes, where time permits. After
rehearsal informals are fine. 4. Would you
be interested in increasing the number of concert
performances throughout the season? Not
unless it is an opportunity we can not resist and
makes . 5a. The board is currently
considering moving our performance venues to more

Do you think this is a good idea and please
suggest any venues where you would like to
perform? I do think part of our problem is
the "amateur" stigma attached to playing at a HS,
so yes. Whitaker too expensive and parking is
difficult. Perhaps one of the major
churches/cathedrals? 5b. If you would like
to play at more prestigious venues, how would you
be willing to contribute? Sorry to say, my
current job does not allow me the time to be
actively volunteering anymore than I do.
6. What are some ways we could increase
attendance at our concerts? Get the seniors in
more by marketing to retirement communities -
bring your grandson or daughter concert and offer
a free ticket? 7. Any additional
ideas/suggestions? Ask ensembles to perform
at functions to raise or auction our talents.

- 5a. The board is currently considering moving
our performance venues to more prestigious (Harris

a good idea and please suggest any venues where
you would like to perform? Well, I guess if it
wouldn't cost too much, I like playing at
Whitaker, but that is probably too expensive. I
don't know too many other venues. -
- 5b. If you would like to play at more

that have members that pay 25/year to become
official members. I'd be willing to pay that. -

- Yes...I know that personally I tried to
get my students to come to the first concert, and
once they heard it was at the high school they
seemed to think it wasn't going to be good. I
would like to see more concerts at the Whitaker
Center. The Forum would be nice as well. A pops
concert at the Arts Fest in the summer would be
nice and we would certainly get lots of attendees
-) - 5b. If you would like to play at more
prestigious venues, how would you be willing to
contribute? -
- I would like to see us do some
fundraisers aside from the Giant cards. I know
that I have tried to sell tickets to my students
and family/friends. I also think that we need to
do better with advertizing...put more posters up
at more locations...maybe give each person a
certain number of posters and have them put them
up at stores and restaurants in their area. - 6. What are some ways we could increase

definitely need to advertise more. -
