Looking Good A Guide to Personal Grooming
  • What not to Wear

2
To Begin Youll Need a POSITIVE ATTITUDE!
  • Want to know why? Heres your ANSWER
  • First off, understand that a positive attitude
toward life is one of the greatest gifts you can
    give yourself.
  • Then, as time passes and people start to notice
that you are filled with positive energy, your
positive attitude will show your performance in
school or on the job and in your relationships
    with other people.
  • Finally, start to trust in yourself and know
that if you have a positive attitude, then your
    self-esteem and self-confidence will rise
    tremendously.

Posture is a Great Way to Start Looking Good
  • Tests to Practice
  • First, sit in a chair and see if you can fit both
hands flat, one below the other, between your
chest and waist. If you cant, your slouching,
which is a BIG NO, NO!
  • Then, stand with your back against a wall, feet a
few inches away from it. Head, shoulders, and
buttocks should touch the wall. One hand should
slide snugly between the small of your back and
    the wall.
  • Finally, grade yourself. If the results of these
tests are anything less than perfect, and even if
theyre not, a few of the following exercises
    should be done faithfully!

4
Exercises to Better Your Grooming Skills
  • Lie on your back, arms extended overhead, knees
bent, feet flat. Pull in your abdomen so the
small of your back presses against the floor.
Hold that position, then relax. Repeat this ten
    times!
  • Lie on your back, arms extended overhead, knees
bent and slightly apart, feet flat. Starting at
the base, slowly lift your spine off the floor,
one vertebra at a time until the whole body
between the feet and shoulders is off the floor
and is supported by feet, head, neck, and
shoulders. Slowly lover your back, one vertebra
at a time starting at the top. Dont lower your
hips until all the vertebrae are down. Repeat
    five times.

5
Exercises Continued
  • Lie on your stomach, chin to the floor, toes
pointed, arms at sides. Lift your head with the
chin thrust forward. Raise your arms with the
wrists flexed and palms up. Hold for a few
    seconds. Repeat ten times!
  • Lie on your stomach with your arms folded in
front of you, one hand resting on top of the
other, elbows out to the sides. Put your chin on
your hands and lift your head with your arms,
elbows up and out. Hold for a few seconds. Repeat
    ten times!

Your Wardrobe is Very Important When Striving to
Look Good!
  • Here are SEVERAL tips on how to take good care of
    your clothing
  • To keep clothes in good shape, have a lint brush
handy to remove surface dirt and lint.
  • Here are tips for items that can stain your
    clothing
  • Ballpoint Pen Ink- For washable fabrics, sponge
with rubbing alcohol. Rub anything remaining with
soap or detergent. For non-washable fabrics,
sponge with alcohol and follow by sponging with a
mild detergent solution of one teaspoon detergent
    to one cup water.

7
Wardrobe Care Continued
  • Blood- For washables, soak immediately in cold
water. If the stain doesnt respond, use an
enzyme presoak. Follow with normal wash. Fro
non-washables, sponge with cold water followed by
a mild detergent solution of one teaspoon
detergent to one cup of water. If this doesnt
work, try one cup of ammonia in a cup of water.
  • Water-base Paint-If the paint is still wet,
sponge both washable and non-washables with
water, trying not to spread the stain further. If
the paint is dry, nothing will get it out!
However, you may be able to scrape some of paint
of the surface with a blunt knife or finger nail.

8
Wardrobe Continued
  • Perspiration- For washables, wash in warm
soapsuds containing a little ammonia or soak in
cold water, wash with borax, and if garment is
white, place in the sunlight or soak spots in
strong salt water. For non-washables, apply
cornstarch to the wrong side while stains are
fresh brush off when dry or send to cleaner.
  • Chewing Gum Candle Wax- For any fabric, harden
the gum by rubbing it with an ice cube. Then
scrape the gum off with a blunt knife or
fingernail. Wax can be removed by scraping and
then ironing. Place the fabric between double
sheets of paper toweling and then iron. The wax
will melt and be absorbed by the toweling.

9
Wardrobe Continued
  • Coffee and Tea- For washables, simple washing
will usually do the trick. For non-washables,
sponge with cold water first, then try a mild
detergent solution of one teaspoon detergent to
    one cup of water.
  • Cream and Milk- Washables need only to be washed.
Non-washables should be wiped with a damp sponge.
If that fails, shake cornstarch or talcum powder
onto the stain, allow to dry thoroughly, then use
a brush or vacuum to remove the residue.
  • Greasy Stains (lipstick) and Tar- For both
washables and non-washables, start with chewing
gum procedure, then use lighter fluid to remove
    remaining stain.

10
Wardrobe Care Concluded!
  • Nail-Polish and Oil-Base Paint- Use nail polish
remover on anything but acetate or triacetate. On
these fabrics, try to scrape polish off with a
    blunt knife or your fingernail.
  • Now, you have all the necessary tips to make sure
you and your wardrobe are top-notch! Good luck!

11
Facial Appearance Skin Care Tips
  • What your face needs most is regular cleansing,
but there are a few treatments you can give
yourself at home to hurry along great complexion!
Take notes, because now you will learn how to
give yourself a facial steam and makeup tips

12
Facial Steam
  • Steam opens the pores and draws out impurities.
After a good facial cleansing, boil some tap
water then remove the pot from the stove. Put
your head over the pot and cover both your head
and the pot with a towel. Be careful not to burn
yourself! Five to ten minutes is sufficient.
After steaming, examine your skin in the mirror
and gently try to remove loosened blackheads. If
theyre ready, theyll come right out. Dont
force them! Once the pores are opened, they must
be closed. A good rinse with cool water should do
it. A once-a-week steaming is sufficient for
problem skin. Once every two weeks is fine for
    skin that breaks out occasionally.

13
Makeup Tip
  • If you want to wear makeup, here are a few hints
  • For oily skin, first apply a thin, light
moisturizer and dust face lightly with talcum
powder. The makeup you use should be powdered
rather than a cream or gel.
  • After all makeup is applied, set it by dusting
lightly with talcum powder again. The talcum
powder absorbs excess oils , but you need only a
little- dont make yourself look white. A good
way to apply it is to put the talcum on a
cosmetic brush, shake off the excess and then
    apply it.
  • For dry skin, always use moisturizer first and
use creams and gels rather than powders.

14
Bathing Is the Most Important Step In Personal
Grooming
  • A bath or shower feels great! The best shower to
take is a short, cool one. Long, hot, soapy
showers rob the skin of nutrients and dilate
capillaries. Soap is necessary only if you have
perspired heavily or are dirty. Otherwise, a
    quick refreshing rinse is fine.

15
Dieting is the Key Step to Looking Good both
Inside and Out!
  • Having a healthy diet is one way to make you feel
good and look good. Without a healthy diet, you
may feel sluggish or tired, which can hinder you
from jump starting your day. Now, you can learn
some interesting facts about burning calories
    from the following chart.

16
Dieting Chart

17
Diet and Hair
  • The food you eat is important to your hair. If
you eat less than 1000 calories a day, your body
wont get enough protein for your hair to replace
itself. Even if you eat nothing but protein, if
you dont eat enough calories, your hair will
thin out. The situation isnt hopeless though. As
soon as you begin eating the right amount of
protein and calories, your hair will grow back!

18
Lets Talk TEETH!
  • Here are some tips for healthy teeth!
  • To make sure that your teeth are clean after
brushing, you may want to chew a disclosing
tablet which stains plaque that you can see the
    spots youve missed.
  • Bad breath can be caused by many things- poor
digestion, gas in the stomach, infections of the
teeth, gums, or sinuses, or food particles
    trapped between your teeth
  • Mouthwash, baking soda, and water can do some
good! It can help temporarily remove the cause of
    the odor
  • Getting help from the doctor is the best way to
get rid of the odor permanently.

19
Lets Do Nails
  • When filing nails, the proper shape is a rounded
tip with sides growing straight up. Angled sides
and pointed tips are not only unattractive but
    encourage chips and breaks.
  • Moisture is an important factor in keeping nails
from becoming brittle and breaking. Use a
conditioning or moisturizing nail cream during
manicures. If nails are stained, soak in
    grapefruit halve.
  • If you want to wear nail polish, your manicure
should include removal of old polish, filing,
conditioning cream, hardener, base coat, two
color coats, and a clear top coat. Always be sure
one coat is dry before applying the next.

Discussion Questions
  • Which physical features do you think most people
hate about themselves? Why? Which physical
features do people seem to admire in others?
  • Do you think television, the movies, and
advertising have made most people think that
there is a certain image that they must live up
to? If so, what is it? How would it be possible
to combat this image and crate your own
    standards?
  • Do you think young people are more aware of their
appearance at some stages of their lives than at
other times? Why? Do you think that there are
stages of adult life when adults are more aware
of their appearance than at others times? Draw
    conclusions.

21
Discussion continued
  • How conscious are you of your body language? What
impression do you think your gestures, facial
expressions, posture, and so forth give to people
    most of the time?
  • Have you ever thought that your posture might be
the reason you sometimes become tired, have
certain aches, and so on? How often do you think
about your posture in one day? In one week? How
can you become more conscious of posture?
  • Can a person wearing expensive clothes look
sloppy and a person with a limited budget for
clothing look special? Why or why not? What
accounts for a persons appearance? Discuss.
