Introduction
As long as men have existed they have
been liable, individually or collectively to
diseases from physical Moral causes. In a rude
state of nature but few remedial status where
required, as the simple mode of living admitted
of but few diseases. With the civilization in
the state, on the contrary, the occasion of the
diseases the necessity for medical aid
increased in equal proportion. Increasing
multiplicity of diseases let to innumerable
dissimilar ideas respecting the nature of
diseases different disease concepts their
remedies sprang from so many dissimilar brains
systems.
3
Session objectives
  • At the end of the session, participants will be
    able to
  • List the different concepts of diseases.
  • Describe Homoeopathic concept of disease.
  • Enumerate the symptoms that are helpful for
selection of remedy diagnosis of diseases.
  • Compare Homoeopathic concept of disease with
    modern concepts

Disease
A disease or medical condition is an
abnormal condition of an organism that impairs
bodily functions and can be deadly. It is also
defined as a way of the body harming itself in an
abnormal way,associated with specific symptoms
and signs. In human beings,"disease" is often
used more broadly to refer to any condition that
causes extreme pain, dysfunction, distress,
social problems, and/or death to the person
afflicted, or similar problems for those in
contact with the person. In this broader sense,
it sometimes includes injuries, disabilities,
disorders, syndromes, infections, isolated
symptoms, deviant behaviors, and atypical
variations of structure and function, while in
other contexts and for other purposes these may
be considered distinguishable categories.
6
EVOLUTION OF CONCEPT OF DISEASE
The concept of disease can be considered
as a good index to the general civil and cultural
patterns of a society and state of development of
the various sciences in it.
Consequently, we find the concept of disease ever
changing through the ages. The knowledge of
etiology depends necessarily on the understanding
of the various physical biological phenomena
that man has observed in nature. His
interpretation of these phenomena determines the
standard of medical care in a community

CONCEPT OF DISEASE Abstract By
contrasting Hippocratic and nineteenth century
theories of disease, this paper describes
important conceptual changes that have taken
place in the history of medicine.
Disease concepts are presented as causal networks
that represent the relations among the symptoms,
causes, and treatment of a disease. The
transition to the germ theory of disease produced
dramatic conceptual changes as the result of a
radically new view of disease causation.
10
THE CAUSAL STRUCTURE OF DISEASE CONCEPTS
Concepts Symptoms are the
observable manifestations of a disease, which can
develop over time in particular ways that
constitute the expected course of the disease.
The symptoms arise from the
cause or causes (etiology) of the disease.
Treatment of the disease should affect
the symptoms and course of the disease, often by
affecting the causal factors that produce the
symptoms.
The causal structure of disease concepts.

Disease Concepts (Divine/Demon or
spiritual concept) b. Hippocrates and
the Humoral Theory

13
Hippocrates and the Humoral Theory Treatment
Hippocrates developed a naturalistic
approach to medicine that contrasted sharply with
the religious views that preceded
him. Diseases arise because of humoral
imbalance. The treatment of a disease
can address either the causes of the humoral
imbalance by changing diet and environment, or
the humoral balance itself. To rid the
body of excess bile or phlegm, methods were used
to induce vomiting or evacuation of the bowels,
and veins were opened to let blood.
The use of emetics, purgatives, and phlebotomy
remained standard medical practice well into the
nineteenth century.

its own cause. Disease is effect of some hidden

EMPIRICISM- (school of experiment experience)-
Empirical kn. Is based on what takes
its data from the reports of the senses (from
experience experiments) does not allow the
reason to play over it.

Methodists/Rationalist Between the
empirics on the one side the dogmatists on the
other side appeared another sect who asserted
that, The knowledge of no cause whatever
bears the least relation to the method of cure.
It is sufficient to observe some general
symptoms of diseases. Which constitutes the art
of medicine. They were first nosologists or
classifiers of diseases.

HAHNEMANNS CONCEPT

9TH Aphorism In the healthy
condition of man, the spiritual vital force
(autocracy), the dynamis that animates the
material body (organism), rules with unbounded
sway, and retains all the parts of the organism
in admirable, harmonious, vital operation, as
regards both sensations and functions, so that
our indwelling, reason-gifted mind can freely
employ this living, healthy instrument for the
higher purposes of our existence. 10TH
Aphorism The material organism, without
the vital force, is capable of no sensation, no
function, no self preservation it derives all
sensation and performs all the functions of life
solely by means of the immaterial being (the
vital principle) which animates the material
organism in health and in disease.
33
11TH Aphorism When a person
falls ill, it is only this spiritual, self-acting
(automatic) vital force, everywhere present in
his organism that is primarily deranged by the
dynamic influence upon it of a morbific agent
inimical to life it is only the vital principle,
deranged to such an abnormal state, that can
furnish the organism with its disagreeable
sensations, and incline it to the irregular
processes which we call disease for, as a power
invisible in itself, and only cognizable by its
effects on the organism, its morbid derangement
only makes itself known by the manifestation of
disease in the sensations and functions of those
parts of the organism exposed to the senses of
the observer and physician, that is, by morbid
symptoms, and in no other way can it make itself
know.
34
12TH Aphorism It is the morbidly
affected vital energy alone that produces
diseases, so that the morbid phenomena
perceptible to our senses express at the same
time all the internal change, that is to say, the
whole morbid derangement of the internal dynamis
in a word, they reveal the whole disease also,
the disappearance under treatment of all the
morbid phenomena and of all the morbid
alterations that differ from the healthy vital
operations, certainly affect and necessarily
implies the restoration of the integrity of the
vital force and, therefore, the recovered health
of the whole organism.
35
  • 16TH Aphorism
  • Our vital force, as a spirit- like
dynamis, cannot be attacked and affected by
injurious influences on the healthy organism
caused by the external inimical forces that
disturb the harmonious play of life, otherwise
than in a spirit-like (dynamic) way, and in like
manner, all such morbid derangements (diseases)
cannot be removed from it by the physician in any
other way than by the spirit-like (dynamic
virtual) alternative powers of the serviceable
medicines acting upon our spirit-like vital
force, which perceives them through the medium of
the sentient faculty of the nerves everywhere
present in the organism, so that it is only by
their dynamic action on the vital force that
remedies are able to re-establish and do actually
re-establish health and vital harmony, after the
changes in the health of the patient cognizable
by out senses ( the totality of the symptoms)
have revealed the disease to the carefully
observing and investigating physician as fully as
was requisite in order to enable him to cure it.

36
104TH Aphorism When the
totality of the symptoms that specially mark and
distinguish the case of disease or, in other
words, when the picture of the disease, whatever
be its kind, is once accurately sketched, the
most difficult part of the task is accomplished.
The physician has then the picture of the
disease, especially if it be a chronic one,
always before him to guide him in his treatment
he can investigate it in all its parts and can
pick out the characteristics symptoms, in order
to oppose to these, that is to say, to the whole
malady itself, a very similar artificial morbific
force, in the shape of a homeopathically chosen
medicinal substance, selected from the lists of
symptoms of all the medicines whose pure effects
have been ascertained. And when, during the
treatment, he wishes to ascertain what has been
the effect of the medicine, and what change has
taken place in the patients state, at this fresh
examination of the patient he only needs to
strike out of the list of the symptoms noted down
at the first visit those that have become
ameliorated, to mark what still remain, and add
any new symptoms that may have supervened.

Dr. K.N. Kanjilal Health, Disease And
Treatment The statement Physicians high
and only mission is to restore the sick to
health, on the face of it, appears to be a
tautology what else can be the mission of a
physician? But the gravity and depth of this
statement become more clear, the more and more
one realizes the true and complete meaning and
connotation of the terms health, disease cure.
HEALTH, can be defined in brief as a state
of active maintenance of dynamic harmony of the
vital force in relation to the environmental
forces and factors, with respect to sensations
and functions and self preservation, so that, in
case of man, endowed with intelligence, reason
and free will, the body-mind-soul can also be
utilized for higher purposes of life in the
interest of fellow beings (apho. 9, 10 et seq. of
the Organon).
42
DISEASE also cannot be taken as a
passive static systemic disorder or organic
lesion, to be recognized only objectively in the
clinic or laboratory, but must be defined as a
dynamic condition of active derangement of the
vital harmony of the whole organism manifested
first in the sphere of sensation (active feeling
of illness and various unpleasant sensations),
then in the sphere of functions (various active
functional disorders), then in the sphere of
material constituents (fluids, cells, tissues and
organs of the body). CURE cannot be
taken as a simple covering up (i.e., palliation)
or removal of a static condition or lesion, but a
dynamic reversal of the disharmony to the
original harmony in a definite order from the
latest manifestation of the disharmony towards
the earliest from centre to periphery and from
above downwards. (apho. 253 et seq, ibid and
Herings laws of Cure).
43
Dr. J.T. Kent, Stuart Close others Life,
Health, Disease and Treatment
  • Every existence of life is due to the simple
substance / life force or vital force.
  • Health disease are the two states of life
  • The form of simple substance is dynamic
  • The microbes are the scavengers accompanying the
    disease are not the cause
  • The affected vital force (disharmonious)
    produces subjective symptoms (Primary symptoms)
initially. The macroscopic changes are the end
products of the diseases (secondary symptoms)
  • Primary symptoms (the disease per se) are
important for selection of medicine secondary
symptoms are (the ultimates of the diseases) are
    useful for diagnosis of disease.
  • The medicine can cure if it is similar in nature
    quality.

Comparison with contemporary views

CONCEPT OF HEALTH
  • Homoeopathy
  • Aphorism -9
  • In the healthy condition of man
  • the physical vital force the
  • dynamis that animates the
  • material body, rules with unbounded
  • sway, retains all the parts of the organism in
    admirable, harmonious, vital operation, as
regards both sensations functions, so that our
indwelling reason gifted mind can freely employ
this living, healthy instrument for the higher
    purposes of our existence.
  • Modern medicine
  • Guyton defines Health as
  • Homoeostasis
  • Homoeostasis is the normal functioning of the
human body wherein the body tries to keep all the
normal functions structures of the body in
    proper harmonious operations.

46
CONCEPT OF HEALTH
  • Homoeopathy
  • Aphorism -09
  • Vital force is automatic
  • Modern medicine
  • Guyton states
  • The reciprocal interplay provides continuous
automaticity of the body until one or more
functions lose their ability to contribute to
    their share of function.
  • Automaticity lost-Homoeostasis disturbed- all
    cell of the body suffer.

47
CONCEPT OF DISEASE
  • Homoeopathy
  • Aphorism -11
  • When a person falls ill, it is the vital force
that is primarily deranged by the dynamic
influence upon it by a morbific agent inimical to
    life
  • The vital force is deranged to such an extent
that it furnishes the organism with its
    disagreeable sensations functions i.e. disease.
  • Modern medicine
  • Textbook of pathology describes disease as
  • an uncompensated disturbance in homoeostasis or
    misfired self regulation.
  • Thus disease may manifest itself , superficially
by structural changes confined to certain cells,
tissues organs arresting symptoms or signs
may be due to these changes.
  • Physiologists say every sick person is
    essentially a functionally deranged organism.

48
Proximate cause of the disease the fundamental
cause.
  • Homoeopathy
  • Maintaining cause of the disease (aphorism-7).
  • Immediate/proximate cause of the disease.
  • Fundamental cause of the disease-Miasms.
  • Modern medicine
  • The preventive social medicine talks of
maintaining causes of diseases like nutrition,
    environmental etc.
  • Pathology books
  • Two types of causes are essential for the disease
    to develop.
  • Initiating/ immediate cause without which the
    disease cannot begin.
  • Predisposing causes which by themselves cannot
cause the diseases. They prepare soil for
    initiating the disease.e.g. lowering the
    resistance

49
Holistic concept and approval
  • Homoeopathy
  • Aphorism -6 7.
  • Portrait of disease
  • Man should be considered as a whole organism that
    is affected not a part.
  • Modern medicine
  • Grays anatomy says
  • Unfortunately perhaps particularly in the
    medical sphere, the compartmentalization of
anatomy into several disciplines or subjects-with
    attendant titles, individual chairs even
    separated departments-tends towards
    disintegration.

50
  • Homoeopathy
  • believes that generals are more important than
    the particulars.
  • Modern medicine
  • Pathology
  • In disease the organism as a whole reacts to the
    disturbance or injury.
  • The abnormalities produced in the structure
function of cells during the course of reaction
can occur in any tissue or organ of the body but
have an essentially similar pattern in different
    tissues.

EVOLUTION OF PSORA Garab/Leprosy
i. Cleanliness through the use of shirts (cotton
and linen) and warm baths. ii.
Handsome diet and improved mode of living.
The external horrors of psora were
moderated within several centuries. At the end of
fifteenth century it appeared only in the form of
common eruption of itch. The fluid of itch
vesicle contains the psoric miasm. If that
fluid come in contact with skin, the miasm gets
an entry in the body. As soon as the
miasma of itch touches the skin, the nerves which
was first affected by the miasma has communicated
it in an invisible manner to the nerves of the
rest of the body. When the miasmatic disease has
received complete interval development the local
symptoms break forth.

EVALUATION OF SYCOSIS Inflection of Gonorrhea
(chronic) through coition After seven days or
several weeks, Even many weeks after
infection. The venereal miasm of sycosis
pervades internally the human organism and on
complete development inside manifests itself
locally by excrescences and appear usually, but
not always they are attended with a sort of
Gonorrhea from the urethra.
55
  • Primary manifestation of Sycosis
  • Character
  • More frequently they are soft, spongy, emitting
    a specifically foetid
  • fluid (sweetish and almost like herring-brine),
    bleeding easily and
  • cox-comb or a cauliflower like appearance.
  • 2. More rarely they appear dry, and like warts.
  • Distribution-
  • In Male - On the glens and on, or below prepuce.
  • In Female - On the parts surrounding the
    pudenda, and the pudenda themselves.

When these excrescences are treated by allopathic
physicians always in the most violent external
way by cauterizing, burning and cutting, or by
ligatures.
They will usually come forth again, usually which
are subjected again, in vain to a similar,
painful, cruel treatment. The figwart disease,
after having deprived of the local symptoms
continues to develop internally and appear in
other and much worse way in secondary
ailments. Secondary manifestations of sycosis
56
EVALUATION OF SYPHILIS Inflection of Syphillis
