• PHONEME meaning distinguishing sound in a
  language, indicated by slash marks /t/ sound
  TYPE, all spoken versions are TOKENS t
• A phoneme functions contrastively eg.
• fine- wine
• fat - vat

Minimal pairs

• When two words such as fat and vat are identical
  in form except a contrast in one phoneme,
  occurring in the same position they are described
  as minimal pair
• E.g. site side, fan van, big - pig
