What is GPS?

• GPS Global Positioning System
• Satellite-based navigation system owned and
  operated by the US Department of Defense
• 29 satellites in orbit 12,000 miles above Earth
• Signals are free for civilian and commercial use
  worldwide

How does GPS work?

• GPS satellites broadcast ephemeris data that is
  picked up by GPS receivers.

Ephemeris (eph-e-mer-i-des) A table giving
the coordinates of a celestial body at a number
of specific times during a given period

distance to each satellite
Receiver compares the signal transmission time
with the signal reception time and uses the time
difference deduce the distance from each of the
visible satellites
