Where Have All the Trees Gone?
  • A Lesson on Recycling
  • (with some math thrown in!)

3
Maybe if we didnt use so much paper for
homework, we wouldnt kill so many trees!
Mrs. E, why are these pictures of the forest
empty? There are no more trees in the forest.
What happened?
4
  • Well, let me explain what is happening.
  • First of all, the population of the world is
increasing, which means more people are using
    more natural resources.
  • Secondly, as we use these natural resources, we
are not replenishing them, like in the case of
the forest. We are not replanting the trees that
have been cut down. We also are not conserving
our resources. Many people think that these
resources are infinite.but we know theyre
    not!!!
  • So what can we do?
  • How can we stop this abuse of our natural
    resources?

Lets Learn How We Can Help
Click on the following link to visit Recycle
City. Here you will find a lot of information
about how and what you can recycle. Let the
learning begin http//www.epa.gov/recyclecity/ma
inmap.htm
7
  • Now that you have learned a lot about recycling,
you should be able to answer the following
    questions.
  • What does reduce mean? Define and give an example
of how you can reduce the use of our natural
    resources in your home.
  • What does reuse mean? Define and give an example
of how you can reuse something to reduce the
    amount of trash you make.
  • What does recycle mean? Define and give an
example of at least 2 items that you can recycle
and how this will help the environment.

8
  • Lets see how many pounds of waste materials we
    recycle each year.
  • Using the following statistics, determine the
amount of waste material recycled every year.
These are not actual statistics. For actual
amounts, please visit the following website
    http//www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/muncpl/index.ht

  • Americans use approximately 235,000 lbs. of paper
each month. If 52 of this paper is recycled, how
much paper still winds up in a landfill?
  • Some drink manufacturers produce approximately
198,325 lbs. of plastic each month to make soft
drink bottles. If 31 of this plastic is
recycled, how much still winds up in a landfill?
  • Aluminum cans are not as popular as plastic
bottles because they cannot be closed inbetween
sips. Manufacturers, however, do turn 89,500 lbs.
of aluminum into cans for drinks. If 45 of this
aluminum is recycled, how much is dumped into the
    landfill?
  • We all use refrigerators, washing machines,
stoves, etc. But due to their size, it is very
important that these appliances are recycled,
because if theyre not, it will produce 415,600
lbs. of waste in our landfills. If 67 of this
material is recycled, how much will still be
    added to our landfills?

9
Okay, now that you have determined how much waste
material is dumped into our landfill each month,
lets view this data graphically. Using Microsoft
Excel, you are to choose either a line graph, bar
graph or pictograph to display your data. You may
visit the following website to review how to
create a graph in excel. http//www.internet4class
rooms.com/excel_create_chart.htm

10
Now lets learn about the different recycling
categories. Please visit the following website to
see how many different ways materials are
classified. http//www.oregon.gov/ENERGY/CONS/RCM/
docs/RecyclingCategories.doc
  • Your next task is to classify items you recycle
at home into the appropriate categories.
  • First, list at least 20 different items that you
can find in your home that can be recycled.
  • Next, using Inspiration, create a chart showing
how you will classify each of these items. Each
column on the chart must list the recycling
category. An example of a classification chart is
shown below but remember, you are classifying
    recyclables, not animals.

11
Recycling is not an adult job. Children can make
a difference too! Your final task is to write a
letter to the mayor of Perth Amboy. As a student
in the Perth Amboy school system, you are well
aware of the fact that we do not have a recycling
program in our schools. You are to write a
friendly letter to Mayor Vas to convince him to
implement a recycling program in our schools and
to donate the money made from recycling back to
the school district to purchase necessary
supplies and equipment. Visit either of the
following websites to review how to write a
friendly letter. http//jc-schools.net/write/frien

Now for some fun! Visit the following links to
play recycling games! http//www.planetpals.com/E

.gov/osw/kids/games/bingame/index.html
13
Im gonna start by not doing my homework. Thatll
save a lot of paper.
Now I understand. We all have to do our part in
order to keep our planet safe and clean! Ill
start working on ways kids can do that today!
