Artist Statement
  • As a young artist I always showed an interest in
the painting the surreal. In my early art classes
I was often scolded or given lower grades because
my perspective was different from the one my
teacher expected. My artistic style was mainly
influenced by my mother. Her art style was more
realistic than mine, but she used vibrant colors
and exaggerated shapes to portray her subject. My
style was also influenced by two of my favorite
artists Andy Warhol and Drew Brophy. I began to
study both of their art at about the same time.
Warhol helped me to develop the way I color and
shade subjects. I have somewhat adopted his style
of coloring images with negative or conflicting
colors. Then from looking at the work of Brophy I
developed my method of softening images with
rounded edges and a giving more flow to my
    pieces.
  • My artwork is primarily about places
and things I have never seen. I like to use
unfamiliar subject matter because it allows me to
create without any preconceived thoughts about
how something should look. When you see an object
for the first time you make note of everything
about it. You look at the shape, color, texture
and what is surrounding it at the time. From then
on you have a mental image of what that should
look like. This image is very hard to change and
limits the creative process. By taking subject
matter that is new to you it is easier to
manipulate it, or take several perspectives on
one object. By doing this I am able to create
pieces that challenge the viewer to see through
my distortions to the true object. I have also
found that it is easier to incorporate emotion
into my pieces this way because I am able to
paint or draw what I see in the context of how I
am feeling at that moment. There are not any
previous memories or thoughts that could distract
me from what I am trying to create. In the
future I would like to be able to create on a
larger scale with mural. My pictures are often
meant to be on a larger scale and present strong
images. Through mural my art would be able to be
viewed by a greater number of people and would
present a stronger message because of the larger
size. I would also like to further develop my
sculpture. In the high school courses offered all
sculpture is limited to small clay projects and
do not encompass the use of stone or metal, which
are of greater interest to me. Large scale
sculpture would also provide a 3-D canvas for my
art and would again be more visible to the
public. I hope that in the future I will be able
to get a job with a graphic design company. My
unique designs incorporate lots of vibrant colors
and oddities that would be perfect for attracting
    attention to advertisements or products.

Face Jug
  • This clay face jug was made in the original
African style. Then twice glazed to give its
marbled appearance. It was created to look happy
no matter what spirits it was holding.

5
Tubin
  • This piece was drawn using a graphite pencil.
Its suppose to capture the freedom felt while
surfing and was inspired by the work of Drew
    Brophy.

6
Obama
  • This multimedia piece sends a strong political
message. The face and suit were done in ink and
the color was painted acrylic. Inspired by Andy
    Warhol.

7
Self Portrait
  • This monochromatic self portrait was done with
tempera paint and set against a conflicting
background to allow for the face to become the
    focal point.

8
Mushroom T-Shirt
  • I created this T-shirt by first tie-dying the
fabric then applying two layers of screen print,
with fabric ink, to give it the two toned color
    of the mushroom.

9
Bomb Hugge
  • This piece was created using a screen print and
black acrylic ink. The depiction of the girl
holding the bomb was a message about the violence
in Gaza and how it is affecting the children of
    the area.

10
Mushroom stencil
  • The Stencil used to create this image was cut
from cardboard and then placed upon another piece
of cardboard and coated with spray-paint.

11
Empty eyes
  • This multimedia piece used both oil pastels and
acrylic paint to give a smoother feel to the
figure and allow the background to pop and be
    more vibrant.
