2
Freedoms
  • There are 4 main freedoms that software must have
    to be considered Open Source.
  • 1. The user must be able to use the software in
    any way they want to.
  • 2. The user must know how the software works.
The source code is critical for this condition.

3
Freedoms Continued
  • 3. Being able to redistribute the software to
other people for personal use is the third
    freedom.
  • 4. The last freedom is the ability to develop
the program and give out new versions to anybody.

4
Types of OSS
  • Linux
  • Free BSD
  • GNU
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Apache
  • Python
  • Perl
  • Prone
  • Jargon

Are there restrictions with OSS?
  • There is only one restriction with Open Source
Software and that is nobody can do anything to
limit the software for other people. In other
words, everybody has the exact same access to it.
  • The maker of the software cannot take away the
license if you are using the software to do wrong.

6
Misc. Information
  • The term Open Source wasnt developed until the
1990s when people realized that calling it Free
Software didnt seem to be all that friendly to
    the big businesses.
  • In 1985, a company called the Free Software
Foundation (FSF) was founded and its main focus
was to support the free software movement

7
Security
  • Most proprietary software companies use the
method of security through obscurity which
means that they protect their users by not
letting people know how the program works. OSS
is the exact opposite, they give out all the
information on how the program was made, hoping
that people will develop new ways of keeping it
    secure.

8
Cons of Open Source Software
  • One con to open source software and that is
    technical support. With most proprietary
software, you will get a warranty and support
when something goes wrong with your computer.
With OSS, you can try getting technical support
but you might not get any help at all.

9
Main Features of Open Source Software
  • Open Source Software is modifiable.
  • You can redistribute the software to anyone you
    want.
  • Can add or delete any part of the program.

10
Advantages of Open Source Software
  • The right to use the software in any way
  • The right to redistribute modifications and
    improvements to the code
  • There is no one with the power to restrict in a
unilateral way how the software is used
  • No per-copy fees can be asked for modified
    versions

11
Disadvantages of Open Source Software
  • There is no guarantee that development will
    happen
  • There may be significant problems connected to
    intellectual property
  • It is sometimes difficult to know that a project
    exist, and its current status.
