Inclined Plane

• A flat surface that has been slanted so that one
  end is higher than the other. This allows
  someone to move an object across a distance to a
  higher point with less work than lifting it,
  carrying it the distance and placing it down. A
  ramp is a common example.

Lever

• A board or bar that pivots or turns on a turning
  point that is known as the fulcrum. Any tool that
  is used to pry something loose can be considered
  a lever. The claw end of a hammer used to pull
  out nails is an example of a lever.

Screw

• An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder.
  Screws are used to raise and lower objects, but
  are also used to hold objects together. A jar lid
  is an example of a screw.

Pulley

• This is made up of a wheel and a rope or cord.
  The rope or cord is wrapped around the wheel and
  as the wheel rotates, the rope or cord goes in
  either direction. You can attach a hook on one
  end of the rope then you can raise and lower
  objects by pulling on the other end of the cord
  which rotates the wheel.

Wheel Axle

• This machine has a rod called and axle which is
  connected to a wheel. The axle allows the wheel
  to turn and can help move objects across
  distances. As the wheel turns, the axle rotates
  causing movement. You can find wheels and axles
  on a car.

Wedge

• Two inclined planes put together to make a sharp
  edge. The wedge is used to push things apart.
  The axe blade is a wedge that is used to spit
  wood. A door stopper is also a wedge.
