Title: CPR

1
CPR
  • Module 4

2
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Combines rescue breaths with chest compressions
  • Give to any unresponsive victim who is not
    breathing normally
  • Most commonly given to victims in cardiac arrest
    resulting from heart attack

3
Cardiovascular Illness
  • Three most common cardiovascular diseases
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

4
Cardiac Chain of Survival
5
Call 9-1-1
  • Have someone else who is available call 9-1-1
    immediately for unresponsive victim
  • Shout for anyone who may hear you, have that
person call 9-1-1 and go for AED

6
Call First/Call Fast
  • Call First (before starting CPR)
  • Any unresponsive adult who is not breathing
  • Call Fast (after giving about 2 minutes of CPR)
  • Any infant or child who is unresponsive and not
    breathing

7
Use of CPR
  • Heart attack
  • Drowning
  • Suffocation
  • Stroke
  • Allergic reaction
  • Diabetic emergency
  • Prolonged seizures
  • Drug overdose
  • Electric shock
  • Certain injuries

8
CPR Technique
  • If unresponsive and not breathing start CPR
  • Find correct hand position
  • Compress chest hard and fast at rate of 100
    compressions/minute
  • Alternate 30 compressions and 2 rescue breaths
  • Give each breath over 1 second

9
  • Open airway and determine if victim not breathing
    normally
  • Give 2 rescue breaths, each lasting 1 second
  • If first breath does not go in, reposition head
    and try again
  • If second breath still does not go in, give care
    for choking

10
Put hand(s) in correct position for chest
compressions
11
Give 30 chest compressions at rate of 100 per
minute Then give 2 breaths
12
  • Continue CPR until
  • Victim begins to move
  • AED brought to scene and ready to use
  • Professional help arrives to take over
  • You are too exhausted to continue

13
  • If victim starts moving, check for normal
    breathing
  • If victim breathing normally, put victim in
    recovery position and monitor breathing
  • When AED arrives, start AED sequence

14
Compression-Only CPR
  • If you cannot or will not give rescue breaths,
    still give chest compressions
