Requirements
  • Established by Chapter 943, Statutes of 2002.
  • Began in January 2003.
  • To ensure that all pupils have physical education
    instruction afforded them by state and federal
    statute.

Purpose
  • Provide all students with instruction in physical
    education.
  • Provide for the required PE minutes mandated in
    law.
  • Provide PE elective courses for students who are
    exempted from two years of PE courses (VI PE-1).

  • Brings clarity on exemptions and waivers

Funding
  • Funding is from general fund accounts, rather
    than categorical funding.

VII-PE 1
  • Elementary students (grades one through six)
    receive physical education instruction for a
    minimum of 200 minutes each 10 school days.

  • Middle school and high school students (grades
    seven through twelve) receive physical education
    instruction for 400 minutes each 10 school days.
    Students in grades seven and eight who attend an
    elementary school receive physical education
    instruction at least 200 minutes every 10 school
    days.

  • School districts that maintain a high school
    and elect to exempt pupils from required
    attendance in physical education for two years
    any time during grades ten to twelve, inclusive,
    shall offer those exempted students a variety of
    elective physical education courses, each with a
    minimum of 400 instructional minutes every 10
    school days.

  • Provide courses to pupils in grades 9-12,
    that include(1) Effects of physical activity
    upon dynamic health (2) Mechanics of body
    movement (3) Aquatics (4) Gymnastics and
    tumbling (5) Individual and dual sports

  • Provides instruction in physical education to

    physical education teachers who hold appropriate
    teaching credentials issued by the Commission on
    Teacher Credentialing.
