Figures of speech can add excitement and
variety to writing. When these expressions are
understood, they can give a work a depth and
richness not present otherwise when not
understood, they can confuse the reader.

Metaphor
  • Definition A comparison of two unlike objects
    without the use of the word like or as.
  • Example The cat's eyes were jewels, gleaming
    out of the darkness.

What is a Metaphor?
Example Her hair is silk. The sentence is
comparing (or stating) that hair is silk. .
  • A metaphor states that one thing is something
    else.
  • It is a comparison, but it does NOT use like or
    as to make the comparison.

Onomatopoeia
  • Definition Using a word (or a group of words)
    whose sound reinforces its meaning.
  • Examples buzz
  • pop
  • fizz

Personification
  • Definition Giving human attributes and/or
    feelings to an idea or thing as if it were human.
  • Examples a wicked tongue
  • a lonely road
  • a lazy day

Simile
  • Definition A comparison of two unlike objects
    using the word like or as.
  • Example My love for you is like a flower in
    morning bloom.
  • Mr. Fox

THE SIMILE 
  • A simile is a comparison using like or as. It
    usually compares two dissimilar objects. For
    example
  • His feet were as big as boats. We are comparing
    the size of feet to boats.
