2
Objectives
  • Understand the structure of pastoral systems and
    the roles within them
  • Clarify what the Pastoral role of a teacher is
and how and where it happens
  • How to take on the role of a pastoral tutor

3
  • Stand up!
  • Sit down if your tutor ever
  • helped with an academic issue
  • wrote a report for you
  • helped deal with an issue with another pupil
  • went on a field trip or visit with you
  • contacted your parents about you
  • gave you advice on personal issues
  • Treated you differently than your class teachers
  • The role of the group tutor survey ?

4
Pupils
  • Central to the whole structure
  • All about supporting their development
  • Enabling them to grow socially and academically
  • Being an effective group tutor is as important
as being an effective subject teacher. Its not a
second level activity with lip service and
sporadic input. The role requires a range of
teaching skills in order to add value to your
tutees. Group tutors in action - Tony Storey,
    Head teacher

14
What is Pastoral Care?Where does it happen?
  • Section 2

15
  • It is not about being a stand in parent and
looking after them as if your own.
  • The central function of pastoral care is to look
after the whole child. It requires a subtle blend
of facilitator, instructor, parent and friend
when working with an individual or group NQT
    handbook - Elizabeth Holmes

16
Pastoral Care is.?

  • Listening
  • Advising and Directing
  • Problem solving
  • Communicating (not confidentiality)
  • Nurturing and Inspiring
  • Giving praise and confidence

  • In tutor time
  • PSHE

  • Monitoring
  • Reporting Systems
  • Personal.Social, Tutorial Delivery
  • Extra Curricular and Community

20
Why is pastoral support important for SEN pupils?
21
What are the barriers to learning that pupils
could have?
  • They dont work well with others
  • They are socially isolated
  • They do not understand lesson content
  • They display inappropriate behaviour
  • They have physical disability
  • They can be the victim of bullying

22
What works for.
  • Verity

23
Who helps you at school?
  • Teachers (all my teachers some of the time)
  • My Group tutor
  • My Head of year
  • Mrs Williamson SENCO
  • Mrs Butler LSAs
  • Those who run extra activities (Mr Pryce,PE
    staff)
  • Other pupils in Yr12 when I was younger

24
How?
  • Teaches sometimes give me easier work and check I
understand when they see me. They talk to me out
    of lessons.
  • Mrs Williamson organises the Buddy Club and the
    LSAs that work with me
  • My parents come to reviews in school they also
help me with school work and my hobbies
  • Outside of school I do gymnastics, gym, dance and
    horse riding.

25
  • I play football with Mr Pryce and do street dance
  • My Head of Year helps me if I have problems with
    other girls
  • My Group tutor makes sure I understand notices,
writes in my planner so my parents know when I
have football. They find jobs for me at dinners
    and breaks.

26
  • The LSAs are always there for me. They listen,
talk and laugh. Encourage me with work. Phone
parents about various things. Take me to school
plays. Go to dinner when Im on my own. Help
    organise my placement.

27
Taking on the Group Tutor role
  • Section 3

28
Initial Thoughts ?
  • How do you feel about it?
  • What are the main difficulties?
  • What skills will you need?
  • Some said.
  • There is so much I do not know about the routines
in school and pupils will depend upon me to know
    everything?
  • Time is so short and there is so much that has to
be done. How will I cope with such a busy and
    intense tutor period?

29
  • Getting to know the students in a very short
    space of time.
  • Imposing yourself as the leader of the group even
though they have a really close relationship with
    their usual tutor.
  • I wont have my subject knowledge or resources to
use so it will be a challenge to maintain their
    focus on me.
  • I know it will be a challenge but I am really
looking forward to it. They will be my group and
I want to do the best for them!

30
Lessons to Learn
  • Get in early and ensure you know the routines as
its a very busy time of day
  • Ease into the role and do not try to take on too
    much
  • Dont fall into the register trap! (its a legal
    document)
  • Get to know the pupils slowly by talking to them
and asking a few questions. Expect them to be
cautious as they dont know you
  • Expect to plan for tutor period if needed
  • You are the first person they see, so a positive
    start is essential

32
Standards ?
  • What standards will the role fulfill in your
    training?
  • Q1,2,4,6
  • Q10,13,15,18,19,20,21ab
  • Q23,26,27,30,31,32

33
They will grow to trust and respect you if
  • You treat them with respect
  • You are organised, efficient and in control
  • You know them and can relate to them as
    individuals
  • They see you as someone who enjoys working with
    them
  • They feel a valued part of the tutor group
    community
