NC Zoo - Water SOPs
  • As a result of the EMS, Animal has written
several Water SOPs that promote consistency.
  • Cleaning SOP Animal has developed a general
Cleaning SOP that is linked to the individual
    exhibit SOPs.
  • Chemicals Since chemicals are used in cleaning,
the Cleaning SOP covers chemical use as well.
  • Large Pool Drain and Fill SOP Includes an
    inventory of pools and capacity.

38
NC Zoo - Irrigation Control
  • Record Reduced water use at Chimp from 210,400
to 61,500 gallons and Australia by 98 and
    Alligator by 83.
  • Project As a result, the Zoo installed an
Irrigation Control System in several key
    exhibits.
  • The system measures the amount of rainfall and
remotely adjusts the amount of irrigation
    accordingly.
  • In the 2008 season, the system saved 1.5 million
gallons (56) as well as fuel and staff time.

39
NC Zoo Water Conservation
  • In 1996 water meters were installed at major
pools including Polar Bear and Seal/Sea Lion to
monitor water use and detect leaks.
  • As a result of the records, the Zoo received
166,000 in 2007 RR funds to repair the leaks at
Polar Bear and Seal/ Sea Lion saving 5,000
    gallons per day.

Case Studies Energy Savings
  • By updating the tire curing process, Michelin
Aircraft Tire Co. in Norwood, NC was able to
eliminate the use of drying drums for some tires,
saving the facility approximately 80,000 per
    year in electricity.
  • The UNC Chapel Hill campus energy manager
identified some 3 million in short-term energy
efficiency investments that would be cost
effective for the university, most in lighting
    and energy efficient motors.

  • Reduce Water Usage by 10 by 2010
  • Reduce Energy Usage by 15 by 2010
  • Reduce Toxic Chemicals Usage by 5 by 2010

45
Reduce Toxic Chemicals Usage by 5 by 2010
  • What chemicals do I use?
  • Which are toxic?
  • What substitutions can I make?
  • DPPEA can provide technical assistance

46
Case Study Michelin Aircraft Tires
  • Michelin Aircraft Tire Co.
  • Eliminated most of the hazardous materials used
  • Decreased hazardous waste levels to conditionally
exempt Small Quantity Generator (SQG) status
  • Eliminating use of hazardous solvents
  • Installed a solvent filter system
  • Replaced chlorine with UV radiation (water
    sanitation)

    treatment tanks.
  • Replaced an old parts washer with two smaller,
    more efficient new parts washers.
  • Borg Warner installed a central ultrafiltration
system to remove solids and coolants from parts
wash water and developed a parts washing system
to recycle water saving 100,000 gallons of water
    used.
