Definition
  • Bioscience York is a private/public sector
    collaboration which represents over 1,500 life
    scientists in the York region. The term
    bioscience includes work in food, water,
    agriculture, health care, environment and
    medicine

Development of Science City York Concept
The first step in the mid 90s was
  • Origins local key players including Smith
    Nephew, Nestlé RD, CSL, DEFRA and University -
    backed by City of York Council
  • Focus collaboration in key areas including HR,
    information resources, research equipment and
    training but not seen to be significant for the
    wider economy but scope for exploitation
  • Future vision brief to Ernst Young in 1997 to
    review future bioscience and wider opportunities
    for a York Science City
  • Priority an integral part of the Economic
    Development Strategic Policy

  • Launched in 1998 by Lord Sainsbury, Science City
    Yorks strategic vision was founded to develop
  • a leading centre at the forefront of
    innovation, creativity and change within a
    prosperous and thriving economy
  • Successful model of collaboration between City of
    York Council, University of York and private
    industry subsequently backed by Yorkshire
    Forward.
