  • Motivation
  • People use special messages everyday to remind
themselves to attend to certain tasks These
reminders take the form of handwritten notes,
email, post-it notes, and calendar programs.
  • These formats do not take advantage of context
in determining when to deliver reminders.
  • Studies have shown that location can be useful,
but because of limited sensing technologies,
studies have been confined to research labs.
  • Cellular phones are widely deployed and the
technology exists to provide location detection
    on them.
  • Approach
  • We have built an application called Place-it
that takes advantage of location positioning to
    determine when to deliver reminders
  • Usage You want to remind yourself to send your
friend John an e-mail when you get home. You post
a reminder to send john email for Home. When
you arrive at Home, your phone will alert you
    to send John an email.
  • Evaluation
  • A study was conducted examining how effective a
    location-based reminder application would be,
    deployed on cellular phones.
  • We installed Place-it on 10 Nokia 6600 phones
which were distributed to users who already had
cellular phones. They used their own SIM cards,
so had access to their contact lists.
  • Study participants used the application for two
    weeks
  • Results suggest location based reminders
deployed on cellular phones can be very
    effective, given accurate location positioning.
