Title: The Milky Way galaxy is the spiral galaxy we call home, as do roughly 100 billion other stars' There

1
Where We are
The Milky Way galaxy is the spiral galaxy we call
home, as do roughly 100 billion other stars.
There are spiral arms and a bright central part.
The Sun is far from the center of the Galaxy,
halfway to the edge of the Galaxy along the Orion
spiral arm.
2
A self-luminous celestial body consisting of a
mass of gas held together by its own gravity.
3
  • There are 3 main
  • types of a star
  • The main sequence, like our sun.
  • 2) Red giants and supergiants
  • 3) White dwarfs.

4
It is often said that the Sun is an "ordinary"
star. That's true in the sense that there are
many others similar to it. But there are many
more smaller stars than larger ones the Sun is
in the top 10 by mass. The median size of stars
in our galaxy is probably less than half the mass
of the Sun.
5
This is a diagram of the lifecycle of a star.
Our star is after the Stellar Nursery stage and
before the Red Giant stage (in the upper half of
the diagram). Our sun has another 5 billion
years to reach the Red Giant stage.
6
Sunspots are dark, planet-sized regions that
appear on the "surface" of the Sun. Sunspots
appear "dark" because they are colder than the
areas around them. These sunspot groups are as
big as the giant planet Jupiter.
7
The constellations are imaginary things that
poets, farmers and astronomers have made up over
the past 6,000 years. The constellations help by
breaking up the sky into more manageable bits.
They are used as memory aids. Orion, the Hunter,
is one of the most easily recognizable
constellations.
8
Will we ever travel among the stars? Someday.
