some old and new friends.
  • Bud has met up with Bugs, his old friend.
  • But then Bud loses him on a train.
  • Along the way to Grand Rapids, he meets another
    man named Lefty Lewis.
  • Lewis gives Bud a ride to Grand Rapids.
  • There, he meets up with the band that Herman E.
    Calloway is in.
  • The band decides that Bud should have a nickname.
  • The name is Sleepy La Bone.
  • He explains that that his mother died four years
    ago.
  • The band asks Bud about his mothers death.
  • His moms name is Angela Janet Caldwell.
  • Mr. C. finds out that his daughter died.
  • Thats when he finds out that Herman is not his
    dad.
  • He is actually his grandfather!
  • In the end, he wants to play with the band in
    some of their shows.
  • And Mr. C. is now being nicer to him.

3
Any Questions?
  • If I were Bud, I probably would have taken some
    food from the Amoss home.
  • In the part where he meets Lefty Lewis, he
probably could have been at least a little bit
    less cautious.
  • How can you probably relate to Bud in this book?
  • How would you react if you found out that your
father was in a famous band?
  • Do you think that Mr. C. probably could have been
a little bit nicer to Bud?

4
Plots
  • One of the plots is when Bud decided to hit the
road, and get away from the Amoss.
  • Another plot was when Bud met Mr. Lewis and
    mistook him for a vampire.
  • Also, he walked into the log cabin and
accidentally called his grandfather his dad.
  • When Bud went into the Station, his grandfather
told him not to look in the closet.
  • Later, Bud finds out that he was sleeping in his
    moms room.
  • Bud explains about his mother death.

5
Setting
  • Bud was in a log cabin when he first met his
    grandfather.
  • When he went to the Grand Calloway Station, he
    was in a huge house.

6
Character Description
  • Mr. Lewis nice, kind, funny, tall, and lean. He
is the one who takes Bud to Grand Rapids.
  • Mr.C. Harsh, mean, sad, lonely, famous,
disappointed, fat around the belly, and not very
healthy. He relates to his the story by being the
guy that Bud goes looking for.
  • Miss Thomas Nice, sweet, friendly, great voice,
hilarious, pretty, very healthy, and a normal
sized woman. She relates to help Bud understand
    his problems.

7

The Great Depression
  • The Great Depression 1929-1939.
  • It began in America, but then it spread
    throughout the world.
  • Franklin Roosevelt was president at this time.
  • 15 of the nation was unemployed. Even in World
    War 2.
  • Britain was not affected too much with the
    working business.

9
Simile, Metaphor, Alliteration
  • Simile Bud is like hunter in the forest.
  • Metaphor Bud is a swan.

Compare and contrast

The author and Orphans
  • I think that the author feels sad for them
    because they have no home.
  • The author also might feel as if the orphans are
a big part of out nation.
  • He could also seem pretty nice toward the
    orphans.
  • I dont know about the author, but I like the
    orphans.
