  • Light-Switching Nanotubes

A 373,000 collaboration between the University
of Surrey and University of Southampton, funded
by the EPSRC Next Generation Electrophotonics
programme, to study optical nonlinearity in
carbon nanotubes.
These nonlinear nanotubes are an example of the
new class of nanoscale composites which will
challenge more traditional photonic materials.

    Research and Innovation

The ATI has acquired an NEC SX-6/4B vector
computer one of the fastest commercially-availab
le - for its supercomputing laboratory. The
acquisition was supported by a second-round
Science Research Investment Fund (SRIF2) award .
The NEC SX-6 system gives us the opportunity to
build on our recent ground-breaking
quantum-theoretical work on temperature on the

An EPSRC research grant of 257,000 to construct
and utilise a new tool for nanotechnology.
The potential applications are almost limitless,
as we can both manipulate structures on the
nanometre scale and probe their elemental
composition. A particularly exciting field will
be the emerging technologies at the life-sciences
interface such as drug delivery devices and
probing the inner workings of living
