Outline of the presentation
  • History and background
  • Objectives
  • Organization and Timetable
  • Current Activity
  • Future

3
History
  • In accordance to COST 290 website
  • COST initiative in Wireless Multimedia Networks
website became available online on October 7th,
    2002
  • January 2003, the first draft of the MoU
    Technical Annex released
  • 35 participants from 17 countries contributed
  • February 13, 2003, the proposal was presented at
    58th COST-TIST meeting
  • oral approval was granted
  • June 2003 was announced as expected date for CSO
    approval

4
History
  • October 21, 2003
  • COST initiative was approved by COST-TIST TC
  • assigned number is 290
  • December 04, 2003
  • the COST 290 Action was approved by CSO
  • March 10, 2004
  • the Action became operational
  • budget is assigned
  • for 12 countries

5
Objectives
  • The main objective of the Action is to increase
the knowledge on future advanced Multiservice
Wireless Networks (MWNs) and specifically on
traffic nature and behavior and its impact on
    network architecture, performance and planning.
  • Special attention must be given to Quality of
Service and related aspects in both access
networks and core networks in the presence of
    mixed multimedia traffic. To accomplish
    this, new analytical tools, software
implementations and prototypes have to be
    developed and validated.

6
Background
  • Some roots came out from COST 263
  • Quality of Future Internet Services, QofIS, ran
    until November 2003
  • contributed to the area of Internet QoS
    architectures, protocols and mechanisms
  • and COST 264
  • Enabling Networked Multimedia Group
    Communication, ran until September 2002
  • contributed to the area of multimedia fixed and
    wireless Internet-based networking
  • mixed with new members
  • new community

7
Relations to exist COST Actions
  • 273 and 279
  • do relate to the area of traffic engineering and
    QoS control in multimedia-enabled wireless
    networks
  • but place special bias on physical layer aspects
    and analytical analysis
  • do not concentrate on architectural-technical
    issues and QoS provisioning

8
Relations to exist COST Actions
  • 285
  • focused on computational tools for modeling and
    simulation
  • an important complimentary area
  • we envisage the possibility of fostering good
collaboration, particularly in the evolution and
    development of new analytical tools
  • 289
  • mainly deals with lower layer protocols and
techniques for adequate capacity and access
    provision

9
