Title: Inheritance

1
Inheritance
  • Evolution and Environment 4

2
Objectives
  • Explain how genes pass on features in humans.
  • Recall who Gregor Mendel was and why he is
    important.

3
Starter
  • Draw a two-column table and, with a partner,
write a list of features about yourselves that
you feel you have inherited and another list of
things about yourselves that you feel you have
    not inherited.

4
Keywords
  • What do the following mean?
  • Genes
  • Fertilisation
  • Gametes
  • Chromosomes

5
What determines our characteristics?
  • Our characteristics are determined by our genes.
  • They are found on chromosomes which are found in
the nucleus of every cell in the body.

6
Why is there genetic variation?
  • There can be different forms of the same gene,
    these are called Alleles.
  • For example the genes for eye colour would have
different alleles for blue, green, grey eyes etc.

7
  • Passing on chromosomes to a child
  • Passing information down through the generations
  • Passing on genes
  • Tongue Rolling

8
Genetic Variation in the class
  • Who in the class can roll their tongues?
  • Does everyone have lobes on their ears?

9
Mendel and his work on variation
  • Look at the following animation on Mendels work.
  • How did his work lead to the idea that there are
    different gene types?
  • Animation

10
Geneticons
