3Basic Idea
First year Amanda as calibration tool for early
IceCube strings 1-4 Later First 15-25 IceCube
strings Amanda form a combined detector much
more powerful than either alone. ? huge added
value in 2006 and 2007 !! Finally Amanda as
high density nested sub-array with considerably
lower energy threshold than the full IceCube
detector and capabilities much beyond Amandas
alone.
4Nested Amanda - physics example 1 Neutrinos from
WIMPs in Sun (low energy, close to horizon!)
?
??
With IceCube veto, Amanda can look above horizon,
even ar low energies !
5Nested Amanda - physics example 2 Identification
of cascades with E lt 100 TeV
?e or ??
IceCube allows for better separation from
brems-showers along HE muons. Only with the
IceCube veto, Amanda develops its full power for
low-energy cascades.
6Some arithmetics
Photocathode light collection area of 18 deep
Amanda strings corresponds to 7 IceCube
strings !
7Integration Plan
- July 12, 2004 Draft Integration Plan
- Focused to time synchronization (schedule
priority!) - Reviewed by Project Office end of June with
- proposals for change
- Discussion of option for synchronization in
- July
- - Decision to make only use of GPS information in
- Amanda and IceCube data respectively
- More discussion here in Uppsala
- New draft to A/I -WG next month
8Simulation and Reconstruction
- Simulation of Ice4/A, Ice16/A has started.
- - Mike Walter (DESY)
- - Pat Toale (PSU)
- - Paolo Desiati (UW)
- IceTray (IceRec) can handle Amanda strings
- 2005
- - Ice4/A combined events no on-line
synchronization. - Therefore either compare separate events in Ice4
- and Amanda (angle, impact point, ...) or
implement - time offset as fit parameter in muon reco
(will that work?) - - Light sources for calibration
9Time Synchronization
Reminder Bommerholz Options Option 1 Amanda
sends its DMADD trigger signal to IceCube,
IceCube handles this like one additional
DOM Option 2 IceCube sends a GPS signal to
Amanda, Amanda writes this as additional
information to its own GPS information

12Since Bommerholz ...
... it became clear
- Tight Pole schedule ? move
- integration activities at Pole to
- season 05/06 (except of TWR work)
- No electrical connection between
- MAPO and IceCube counting House
13Synchronization 2005/06 and later
- No use of DMADD (ceases 05/06 or 06/07)
- Use both
- 1) Synchronization signal Amanda
- ? IceCube (DOM
MB) - 2) GPS signal IceCube ? Amanda
- ... new GPS with
- more functions ?

18TWR Software Trigger
- - Indispensable for Amanda integration
- - Coming season Installation of TWR
- software trigger in Amanda
- huge data volume 60 MB /second
- time for trigger formation 2-4 sec
- challenging ! Manpower at (hopefully not
- below !) absolute lower limit (asked for 6,
- obtained only 3.5 time slots)
- (Wagner, Ackermann, Messarius,

20Next months priority
- TWR s/w trigger at Pole
- Intensify dicussions and coordination in
- A-I integration Working Group
- - Simulation of Ice4-A (Ice16-A)
- Software to merge Ice4 data with Amanda
- data at NH, implement all fits, relate
calibration - information for both detectors
- Try to use of light cross calibration signals in
- IceCube, as well as coincident muons, to
- determine time offsets.
