Title: WP20900 on Damage assessment and rapid mapping

1
WP20900 on Damage assessment and rapid mapping
  • Integration aspects

2
Objectives for integration
  • General objectives
  • Assess research currently underway with partners
and elsewhere in assessing damage specifically in
urban areas and for critical infrastructure such
as traffic lines or power lines
  • Develop a road map for future co-ordinated
research to bring together a variety of disparate
techniques for rapid mapping and damage
    assessment.
  • Initiate, and stimulate, and carry out research
for new concepts and techniques for rapid mapping
    and damage assessment.
  • Integrating activities
  • Two workpackage workshops in 2005
  • Assessment of user requirements needs
  • Joint workshop with technical generic technology
    workpackges (WP20100, WP20300) and
    socio-political analysis workpackages (WP21200).
  • Dissemination of results in a joint paper
  • Composition of a roadmap for future research on
and appropriate use of relevant technologies and
    methodologies for damage assessment.
  • Sharing of data for test sites.

3
Progress on integration within workpackage
Post-crisis damage assessment Natural disasters
Post-crisis damage assessment Security
Pre-crisis risk assessment (of damages) Natural
disasters Joanneum Probability assessment of
damage risk in elevated areas (mass movement,
avalanches, flood plane, road rail
track). Security Link to socio-political WPs
(TNO WP21300, WP21100)
4
Progress on integration with other workpackages
  • Participation in several cross WP workshops
  • GMOSS meeting Towards Consolidated Security and
    Stability, February 2005, Goldegg
  • GMOSS Tsunami workshop (WP20900), 11/12 April
2005, The Hague. Participants from several work
    packages (WP20100,20200,20300,21200,20700)
  • GMOSS participation in Generic tools workshop,
    29-30 August 2005, Copenhagen
  • WP21300 inaugural meeting together with WP21100,
    September 22 2005, London,.
  • Telecon with WP20900/WP21200, 29 September, on
Relevant crisis patterns. How GMOSS elements (in
this case WP20900) contribute to response to
    crisis (WP21200).
  • Integration workshop November 15 joint activity
    with technology and socio-politcal workpackages.

5
Future objectives for integration (short term)
  • Further specifying of requirements in relation
    with WP21xxx, especially WP21200
  • Assessing and using output from technology WP
    (feature lists, change detection catelogue)
  • Continuing liaison with other application work
    packages
  • Execution of intra WP roadmap for research on
fast extraction procedures and algorithms wrt
  • 1) Damage assessment (urban areas, buildings)
  • 2) Rapid mapping of damaged infrastructure.
  • Testcases
  • Sumatra (tsunami), BAM, Baghdad, Grozny, North
    Korea, Gaza strip
  • Method (distribution over partners is still
    tentative)
  • Overview (quick and rough)
  • Landsat (DLR)
  • Radarsat (TNO)
  • ERS coherent change detection (CEA, Joanneum)
  • Detailed analysis
  • HR optical (DLR, CEA)
  • HR radar (TNO)
  • 3D stereo (Qinetiq, Joanneum)

6
Future objectives for integration (long term)
  • Specify the requirements
  • Matching the capabilities of partners
  • Providing an infrastructure for EU
  • Damage assessment (urban areas, buildings)
  • Rapid mapping of damaged infrastructure.
