Tychicus
  • Colossians 47

2
Introduction
  • Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once wrote
  • Lives of great men all remind us
  • We can make our lives sublime,
  • And, departing, leave behind us
  • Footprints on the sands of time.
  • (A Psalm of Life)

3
Introduction
  • Who was Tychicus?
  • He is mentioned 5 times in the Bible
  • What sort of person was he?
  • Was he someone we should imitate?

4
Who was Tychicus?
  • Acts 204
  • Pauls companions on his return to Jerusalem
    after his third missionary journey
  • Men were selected from different churches to
carry their gift to the needy saints in Jerusalem
    (1 Cor 163-4)
  • Tychicus, along with Trophimus, came from the
    province of Asia
  • What kind of man was Tychicus?

5
The character of Tychicus
  • He was a TRUSTWORTHY man
  • The church in Asia trusted him to bring their
gift to the needy saints in Jerusalem
  • Col 47-8 Eph 621-22
  • Paul knew him to be honest and dependable
  • Titus 312
  • Paul trusted him to relieve Titus in Crete
  • 2 Tim 411-12
  • Paul trusted him with the work in Ephesus
  • Trustworthy men are dependable and honest
  • They faithfully perform their responsibilities

  • Col 318-21
  • Familial responsibilities
  • Col 322-25
  • Employment responsibilities
  • Col 41
  • Management responsibilities
  • Col 45-6
  • Responsibilities for how you act toward everyone
  • Will God see us as worthy of His trust?

7
The character of Tychicus
  • He was a beloved brother (Col 47, Eph 621)
  • Brother indicates the family relationship in
    Christ
  • The church is Gods family (1 Tim 315)
  • Christians are Gods children (Rom 814-17)
  • 1 Pet 117-23
  • We are brethren born from incorruptible seed
  • We have a responsibility to love
  • He was beloved
  • Because he was encouraging (Col 48, Eph 622)
  • Would we be called beloved brethren?

8
The character of Tychicus
  • He was a faithful minister
  • Minister (Grk diakonos) means a servant
  • The kingdom is a spiritual domain INTO which we
    are conveyed (Col 112-13)

The character of Tychicus
  • He was a fellow servant in the Lord
  • Servant (Grk doulos) means slave
  • Jn 832-34
  • Before coming to Christ all are slaves of sin
  • Rom 615-23
  • If you belong to God, then His slave
  • Freedom in Christ is NOT a license to do what you
want to do it is the privilege to do what you
    ought to do (Col 317)
  • Would God consider us to be His slaves based on
    the way we live?

10
Conclusion
  • The Bible has examples of great men for us to
    follow
  • Not all are well-known
  • Perhaps a less-known example, like Tychicus, will
    impact us more
  • He was like us, simply a Christian
  • Yet are we like him?
  • Trustworthy, honest, dependable
  • A beloved brother
  • A faithful servant
  • A fellow slave of the Lord
