1
Planning and Evaluating Effective Practicewith
e-Learning
5. Specific e-learning advantages
Presenters Title
2
In practice, we asked
  • How can e-learning tools and resources support
  • specific activities/outcomes?
  • specific learners needs?
  • How should (e-)learning be organised to maximise
  • learners choice and autonomy (locus of control)
  • opportunities for feedback, consolidation
    (practice) and integration
  • opportunities for collaboration and peer learning?

3
A typology of technologies for learning
  • Based on Laurillard (1993, 2nd Edition 2003)
  • Typology has been used to support design for
    learning
  • e.g. Conole (2004) Littlejohn (2004) Warren and
    Mayer (2000)
  • Expresses how technologies are used for learning
  • Narrative enabling representation of ideas
  • Communicative enabling dialogue between
    learners and others
  • Interactive, Productive and Adaptive enabling
various forms of interactivity between learner(s)
    and the learning system
  • Integrative (added category) enabling
    integration of learning across activities

4
The typology can be used to
  • Choose a technology type
  • to support a specific learning activity or
    outcome
  • Choose specific technologies within a type
  • to suit learners ICT capabilities and skills
  • to offer learners choice and autonomy
  • e.g. over mode of access, approach to learning,
    medium used, adaptive technology
  • to support collaborative and peer learning (if
    appropriate)
  • that is available, affordable and effectively
    supported

5
Ten technologies for e- and m-learning
6
Group activity the technology advantage
  • You will be allocated one technology
  • Decide where the technology fits in the typology
  • i.e. what use (or uses) it is most suited for
  • Draw up a list of
  • Potential advantages for learning and for
    learners
  • Potential risks for learning and for learners
  • Real world constrains and considerations
  • You have 25 minutes to produce a poster on your
    technology
  • Tea and poster exhibition at 1500!
