Title: STARS

1
STARS
  • Some information to make you brighter about your
    night sky.

2
LIGHT YEARS
  • The distance light travels in one year, or 9
trillion kilometers. Scientists use light years
    as units of measurement.

3
A
B
PARALLAX is the shift of an objects position when
viewed from two locations.

(No Transcript)
5
ALPHA CENTAURI
  • Is the star closest to the earth (excluding the
sun) at 4.3 light years away.

6
CONSTELLATIONS
  • Are star patterns.

7
MAGNITUDE
  • Is the brightness of a star.
  • The brighter the star, the smaller the magnitude
    number. 1 is the brightest.
  • Temperature, Size, and Distance affect magnitude.

8
ABSOLUTE MAGNITUDE
  • Is the brightness you would see if all the stars
were the same distance from the earth.

9
STAR TERMS
  • VARIABLE STARS change in brightness over days.
  • CEPHEID VARIABLE one bright cycle in a constant
    period.
  • NOVA A star that suddenly brightens

10
STAR COLORS are related to age and temperature.
RED Older, Cool
YELLOW Average, Hot
BLUE/WHITE Young, VERY Hot
11
SPACE DIRECTIONS
  • COMPASS DIRECTIONS
  • HORIZON Line between the earth and sky
  • ZENITH Point directly above you.

12
SPECTROSCOPES
  • Are instruments which break light into colors of
the spectrum. Each element gives off certain
    wavelengths allowing scientists to determine
    composition of a star.
