Minor Parties
  • Ideological parties- Based on a particular set
    of beliefs. Marxists thought. Typically long
    lived.
  • Single-issue parties- Focus on only one
    public-policy matter. Most died away as events
    passed them by.
  • Economic Protest parties- Rooted in periods of
    economic discontent. Sectional parties.
    Disappear as economy improves.

Minor Parties
  • Splinter parties- They break from one of the
    major parties. Bull Moose party. Most form
    around a strong personality.

Importance of Minor Parties
  • Minor parties were the first to use a national
    convention to pick a presidential candidate.
  • Minor party can play a spoiler role in an
    election.
  • Minor parties typically dont dance around issues.
