What is PBL?
  • Self directed, group learning, reflecting
    development towards becoming an independent and
    accountable practitioner.
  • Student centred, encouraging skills in initiative
    taking, team working, negotiating, decision
    making, prioritising and the analysis and
    presentation of new information.

PBL Triggers
  • Community and Specialist Mental Health Nursing
    Practice modules Year 3
  • Student is presented with a series of four linked
    triggers re Peters story. These seek to
    replicate the real and complex world of practice.
  • With guidance from lecturers, students are
    required to work in small groups, formulating
    their considered responses to each trigger.
    Findings are presented back by student PBL groups
    to the whole group.
  • Each PBL cycle spans a 2 week period
  • The process of how students work together is as
    important as what they do together - opportunity
    to develop transferable team working,
    decision-making and self awareness skills.

    and/ or carer? How do you know it?
  • What do you need to know to solve the problem, or
    to explore the situation?
  • How will you find out what you need to know?
  • Conduct a search of research and related
    literature, and summarise
  • Interview one or more mental health practitioners
    or service managers
  • Obtain, read and understand local policy
    documents
  • Present findings (verbal written)
  • Self, peer and lecturer assessment
