? A biomolecule tagged with luminophore
becomes visible in the cell ? We develop
luminescent nanodiamonds for tagging
biomolecules, e.g. proteins, DNA ? They are
bright, small, non-toxic, and very
photostable!

? Neurons communicate by secreting
neurotransmitters or peptides via the
processes exocytosis (see right Figure). ? We
will track single molecules involved in this
process by tagging them with optically bright
nanoparticles (quantum dots in left Figure). ?
Nanoparticle cargo delivery in cells is envisaged.

? Multiphoton microscopy is an new imaging
method, which enables imaging of live tissue
on the subcellular level. ? For example, both
sun-screen nanoparticles (zinc oxide) and skin
architecture are imaged with exquisite clarity
and resolution (see Image). ? Using this method,
we study nanoparticle penetration through skin
(via hair follicle, as in bottom left Fig.),
and regeneration of cartilage tissue.

? Remote sensing of a fluorescent object for
e.g. sea-rescue, using pulsed
laser/time-gated detection system. ? The
target system will be mounted on a helicopter
to sense and identify sea survivors wearing
fluorescent life jackets. ? This project is
funded by a company that is entering
multi-million dollar market.
