Fiction
  • Read for enjoyment or pleasure
  • Often has chapter titles
  • Has a main theme or idea, however, there is no
    topic or main idea sentences

3
Nonfiction
  • Read to find information or facts
  • Has subject headings
  • Should read slower and think about the
information or facts we are reading

4
Components of Fiction
  • Point of View (who is telling the story?)
  • Setting (Where and When does the story take
    place?)
  • What happens in the story? (the plot)
  • What is the problem and the solution?

5
Components of nonfiction include
  • Chapter and/or Unit Titles
  • Topic Headings
  • Glossary (for unknown words)
  • Index (to find words)
  • Topic and Main Idea
  • Details to support the main idea

  • Both contain a table of contents
  • Both have words we may not know or understand so
use context clues or a glossary or dictionary
  • You can summarize both

7
How To Read Nonfiction
  • Read the Chapter Title
  • Read the Headings (Highlight or use sticky notes)
  • Read the questions first (sets the purpose for
    reading)
  • Read to find the main idea and supporting details
(think about who, what, why, how questions)
  • Skim and scan to find facts
  • Use graphic aids (graphs, maps, and charts) to
