Title: Types of Weather

Types of Weather
  • By Lenae Roberts

Rain
  • Four types of rain
  • Convection
  • Relief
  • Frontal
  • Monsoon
  • Convection
  • Requires a warm ground and low pressures. It
causes short answers of sunny periods. The rain
is caused by rapidly forming Cumulus and
Cumulonimbus clouds. It tends to occur in the
later part of the day or early evening Convection
causes fluffy Cumulus clouds to appear over land.
  • Relief
  • Relief rain is formed when air is forced to cool
when it rises over relief, features in the
landscape, such as hills or mountains. Relief
Rain is characterized by thick clouds with
drizzly conditions and can occur at any night,
day or night. The relief ran does not occur over
    flat areas.

Rain (cont.)
  • Frontal
  • Frontal Rain is caused when two air masses met.
When frontal air is formed warm air and cold air
meet. The warm air is forced over the cold air
and where the air meets the warm aired is cooled
and water vapor condenses. Clouds form and
    precipitation occurs.
  • Monsoon
  • Monsoon Rain is caused by cyclic air movements
changing with the time of year. Monsoon Rain
occurs when the land becomes warmer than the sea.
This causes the air to rise over the land, pass
out to the sea, descend, then come over the land.
The rising air will than be over the sea, it will
condense and rain will fall. Monsoon rains are
    seasonal.

Clouds
Clouds
  • Cumulus
  • The cumulus clouds are puffy looking clouds.
They have flat bottoms and are low in the sky.
Cumulus clouds usually mean fair weather. If they
grow tall, they can become thunderheads and bring
    rain.
  • Stratus
  • Stratus clouds are the low clouds. Fog is a
stratus cloud at ground level. They look like a
low gray blanket. Stratus clouds bring rain or
    snow.
  • Cirrus
  • Cirrus clouds are the highest clouds. They
usually mean fair weather. They look white and
    feathery.
  • Nimbus
  • Nimbus clouds are dark rain clouds. They
usually have a grey color to them.

Severe Weather
  • Tornadoes
  • A tornado is a violent rotating column of air
in contact with the ground. A tornado comes from
    a nimbus cloud.
  • Tornadoes can be categorized as being weak,
    strong or violent.
  • -Weak tornadoes often have a thin, rope-like
appearance. These tornadoes only have wind speed
    up to 110 mph.
  • -Strong tornadoes often have a more thick
appearance and are more broad in diameter. Strong
tornadoes have winds speed from 110 mph up to 200
    mph
  • -Violent are very big in sized and cause the
most damage. The winds of a violent tornado are
    200 mph and higher.

Severe Weather (cont.)
  • Hurricanes
  • Hurricanes occur when a type of tropical
cyclone is accompanied by thunderstorms. With
this a clockwise circulation of winds( very
strong winds) hit the earths surface.
  • Hurricanes are classified by a Saffir-Simpson
Hurricane Scale. This machine categorizes the
strength of the hurricane winds. It categorizes
from category one hurricanes to category five.
Category one hurricanes have lower wind speed and
category five have the strongest wind speed.
  • Lightning Storms
  • Lightning is a form of electrical discharge
    between clouds and the ground.
  • Lightning sometimes appears as jagged streaks
and a flash in the sky.
  • Lightning is one of the most dangerous and most
    accurate severe weather. Cloud-to-ground
lightning can kill or injure people by direct or
indirect means. The lightning current can branch
off to a person from a tree, fence, pole, or
    other tall objects.
  • Here is a website that gives safety tips when
    there is lightning.

Sun
  • What is the Sun?
  • The sun is a hot glowing ball of gas. The suns
heat and light influence all of the objects in
the solar system. The sun allows life to exist on
    Earth.
  • How does the sun affect the weather?
  • The sun is the main source for weather. The suns
heat regulates the weather the earth has. The
heat that comes from the sun warms up the air on
    earth.
  • With the earth being on an axis, it is tilted
towards the sun. With this different parts of
the earth is heated. That is how we get our
different types of weather and seasons. For
    example
  • Summer  The  northern  hemisphere of the earth
is tilted toward the sun in the summer. The sun
    warms the northern hemisphere.
  • Fall/Spring Neither hemisphere is tilted toward
the sun in fall or spring. The sun is focusing on
the equator. Neither hemisphere is really hot or
    cold.
  • Winter The northern hemisphere is tilted away
from the sun in the winter. The sun is focusing
    on the southern hemisphere.
