Title: 11'6 Classifying Conics

1
11.6 Classifying Conics
  • If the equation has either x2 or y2, but not
    both, it is a parabola.
  • If the equation has both positive x2 and y2, with
the same coefficients, it is a circle.
  • If the equation has both positive x2 and y2, with
the different coefficients, it is an ellipse.
  • If the equation has both x2 and y2 with the
different coefficients, and one of them is
    negative, it is a hyperbola.
  • Remember when completing the square if the
coefficient in front of the squared term is not
    1, factor that term out.
  • Also, when graphing draw the new axis through the
    center.
