Faith vs Science
  • Historical Perspective

The Practice of Science
Science is a focused, collaborative,
experimentally driven approach to answer
questions about how the natural world works.
12
Scriptures on Faith
  • Faith is being sure of what is hoped for and
certain of what we do not see (Heb. 111)
  • if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you
will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to
there,' and it will move (Matt. 1720)
  • Centurions story (Only say the word)
  • And without faith it is impossible to please Him,
for he who comes to God must believe that He is
and that He is a rewarder of those who seek
    Him.(Heb. 116)

13
Faith statements
  • The Bible is the in-errant Word of God
  • Evolution is evidence that there is no God
  • Jesus is the Son of God
  • There are multiple universes

14
A life approach
  • 1. Ask the hard questions

2. Really look at the answers
3. Experience the wonder
15
And God said
  • .and there was light

16
A life approach
  • 1. Ask the hard questions

2. Really look at the answers
3. Experience the wonder
4. Worship the living God

A bit about modeling
  • Physics is well understood
  • Model initial conditions are NOT well known
  • Model inputs are fairly well understood
  • Predictability depends upon initial conditions
    and inputs
  • Models provide opportunity to probe nature

Statement of the AGU
  • The Earth's climate is now clearly out of balance
and is warming. Many components of the climate
    systemincluding the temperatures of the
atmosphere, land and ocean, the extent of sea ice
and mountain glaciers, the sea level, the
distribution of precipitation, and the length of
seasonsare now changing at rates and in patterns
that are not natural and are best explained by
    the increased atmospheric abundances of
greenhouse gases and aerosols generated by human
activity during the 20th century. Global average
surface temperatures increased on average by
about 0.6C over the period 19562006. As of
2006, eleven of the previous twelve years were
warmer than any others since 1850. The observed
rapid retreat of Arctic sea ice is expected to
continue and lead to the disappearance of
summertime ice within this century. Evidence from
most oceans and all continents except Antarctica
shows warming attributable to human activities.

42
A faith response
  • God created the earth
  • God entrusted it to us
  • Nature worships God
  • God is on the side of the poor

43
So how do we respond? (WWJD?)
  • Worship
  • Stay informed
  • April 19th Climate Change Coffee Chat
  • grist.org
  • globalwarmingart.com
  • pewclimate.org
  • Get involved

44
Another personal story
45
Conclusion
  • Faith and Science - can be successfully
    integrated
  • Ask the hard questions
  • Really look at the answers
  • Experience the wonder
  • Worship
