    Water Act of 1972.
  • The OPA was signed into law in response to the
    Exxon Valdez incident.
  • The OPA was created in order to prevent and
    respond to oil spills.
  • The OPA also created a trust fund that provides
    up to a billion dollars per spill incident.
  • Environmental Protection Agency is responsible
    for regulation and enforcement.
  • The Federal Government, area committees, and
    owners and operators of vessels must prepare
    there own Facility Response Plans.
  • The OPA also created severe penalties for
    noncompliance.
