3Membership in NJHS is an Honor and Privilege
- Students do not apply, they are selected by a
five-member faculty council - Must be in 7th or 8th grade
- Must be enrolled in Pine Hill Middle School at
least one full marking period
4Selection of Members is Based on Five
Categories
- Scholarship
- Character
- Leadership
- Service
- Citizenship
5Scholarship
- Academic achievement of 3.5 GPA
- (To calculate GPA A 4.0, B3.0, C2.0)
- All marking period grades at PHMS count toward
calculating the GPA (grades 6-8) - 8th Grade Algebra is weighted since it is
equivalent to a high school course

suggesting solutions - Demonstrate initiative

- STEP 1- Cumulative GPA calculated
- After second marking period report cards, GPA
will be calculated for 7th and 8th graders - Students who meet the Scholarship criteria of 3.5
GPA will be notified

- Discipline Records
- Faculty Council reviews discipline records to
determine whether candidate meets Character,
Leadership, and Citizenship criteria

- Faculty Evaluation
- All faculty members will complete an evaluation
of qualifying candidates - Faculty will provide a rating of each candidate
in the categories of Leadership, Character, and
Citizenship - Faculty Council reviews the rating to aid in
determining whether candidate meets Leadership,
Character, and Citizenship criteria - 4high/outstanding, 3good, 2below average,
1low/poor

- Student Activity Information Form
- Qualifying candidates will complete a Student
Activity Information Form - Provides documentation of service and leadership
activities - Faculty Council reviews to determine whether
candidate meets Service, Leadership, and
Citizenship criteria

- Citizenship Essay
- Qualifying candidates will submit an original
essay reflecting character and citizenship - Essay Topic What are the characteristics of an
outstanding citizen? Why are you an outstanding
citizen? Give specific examples of your
qualities and actions. - Faculty Council reviews to aid in determining
whether candidate meets Character and Citizenship
criteria
17Membership in NJHS Selection Process Workshops
- The NJHS Adviser will hold workshop(s) to assist
candidates in completing Student Activity
Information Form and drafting Citizenship Essay
18Membership in NJHS Obligations
- Attend monthly meetings
- Participate in one chapter service project
- Perform individual service project
- Continue to demonstrate the qualities of
scholarship, service, leadership, and character
