  • Animal Testing
  • By Tsuefue Moua
  • Section 621

2
History
  • Animal testing can be traced to the times of
    Aristotle.
  • He, among others, were famous for dissecting pigs
and live stock to gather information about the
    body.
  • Product testing, using animals, started in the
    late 1920s.
  • Began when a woman, using Lash Lure mascara, went
blind and eventually died from the product.
  • In 1938, the FDA passed the Federal Food, Drug,
and Cosmetic Act in order to protect the public
    from incidents like this.
  • In the mid 1920s, 70 of dogs used to find the
    treatment for diabetes was useless.

QA
  • How are animals tested?
  • The Draize Test
  • Method of dropping chemicals directly into the
eyes of an animal to see the effects on the
cornea. Usually confined in a cramp cage and
given no anesthesia . Tests can last up to 18
days while having the animals eye lids open
during the whole process. Most animal die in the
    process of escape.
  • LD50
  • Use to determine the toxicity levels of a
product. Animals can be either force feed through
a tube, have their throats cut open, force into
the rectum or vagina, gassed or even injected
into the skin and blood vessels. 50 100 of the
animals will die after they test due to the
    chemicals they are injected with.

QA
  • How are animals tested?
  • Useless Acts
  • Undercover reports from PETA, an organization
helping to stop animal testing, have shown that
many researchers experiment on animals because
they didnt have anything else to do.

5
QA
  • How are the animals treated during the tests?
  • All animals in labs suffer from various amounts
of pain, many die within seconds of some
    experiments.
  • Many are locked up in cages that prevent them
from moving for weeks and some are locked away
    for years!
  • Dogs are beaten brutally and many times
researchers cut their vocal cords off to keep
    them quiet.
  • Lab animals are sometimes tested WITHOUT any form
    of anesthesia.
  • In order to tell what animal had what products,
they sometimes scar the animals, either by
cutting marks into them or burning them.

6
QA
  • Is using animals really worth it?
  • Sometimes, but countless researchers and
scientist have concluded that using animals to
    test products can be misleading.
  • Hundreds of products are pulled off the shelves
each year because of misinterpret information.
  • Animals are no way related to humans.
  • The cost of using animals are higher than their
    alternatives.
  • Also less reliable.

Alternatives
  • Eytex
  • A test tube procedure that gives better results
than the Driaze test for eye irritations.
  • Skintex
  • A test tube procedure that detects skin
    irritation.
  • EpiPack
  • Uses cloned human tissue to detect chemical
    reactions on the skin.
  • Neutral Red Bioassay
  • Culture human cells used to detect toxicity
  • Testskin
  • Skin cells used to read skin irritation.
  • TOPKAT
  • Computer that detects everything a chemical can
    do to the human body.
  • Ames Test
  • Detect carcinogens.
  • Agarose Diffusion Method
  • Test for toxicity in artificial body parts.
