3A Few Quick Facts About SiS
- Scientists in School (SiS) is a dynamic
charitable organization dedicated to establishing
a strong foundation of science and innovation
among Canadian youth. - Our mission is to ignite scientific curiosity in
children so that they - question intelligently
- learn through discovery
- connect scientific knowledge to their world and
- consider a career in science.
- Through early positive exposure to science and
technology, SiS cultivates tomorrows leaders
the scientists, innovators, technologists and
environmentalists that Canada needs for the new
economy.
4- A collaborative effort of community scientists
educators and business, founded in 1989 - Over 21,000 Ontario classrooms participated last
year 21 partner school boards - 570,000 K to Grade 8 students every year become a
scientist in their school - Fueled by the passion and skills of 400
well-trained presenters with degrees and career
experience across the sciences, technology and
engineering - 50,000 enthusiastic parent volunteers who both
support and learn - An in-classroom PD opportunity for teachers,
providing new ideas, resources and science
expertise - Science becomes fun for everyone and science
literacy soars

7Program Quality Customer Satisfaction 2008/09
- Comprehensive re-alignment of all workshops to
support the new Ontario S T Curriculum. - SiS has an extensive evaluation process that
includes teacher evaluations, customer follow-up
calls and over 450 quality assurance visits

8Program Evaluation
- OISE at the University of Toronto research study
measured the impact of - Scientists in School. The results across 2,500
participants showed - 75 of students were more interested in science
as result of participation - 99 of teachers reported that Scientists in
School enriched their students - learning in science and technology
- 90 of teachers indicated an enhanced
confidence in teaching science and - technology
- 100 of parents reported they believe the
program helped students to - better understand science concepts
