  • It is well known fact that the use of Solar
    Energy for domestic and commercial heating and
    lighting is one of the viable and sustainable
    solutions to the energy problem.

  • Considering the fact that even today many
    villages in our area of operations do not have
    sufficient power supply and there are power cuts
    at crucial hours.

  • The problem of power shortage being faced by
    the rural masses is viewed as an opportunity for
    the Bank to extend finance for solar lighting
    systems.

  • National Level Knowledge Sharing Workshop was
    organized by Bhartiya Vikas Trust, Udupi
    (Manipal)
  • at our Office
  • on 20th March, 2008 where our Bank was co-host
    to organize the Workshop.

  • This Workshop along with other dignitaries from
    State Nation Level and also attended by our
    Area Managers / Senior Managers with an
    objective to acquaint with the Solar Home Light
    System in the remote villages.

GLIMPSES OF EVENTS TOOK PLACE IN THIS DIRECTION
  • Display and demonstration of the products
    related to Solar Home Lighting System was held at
    various places and people in remote areas were
    encouraged to adopt this cheap and effective
    source of energy.

  • The Branches and Offices are advised to take
    immediate action to aggressively market the
    products under the schemes by initiating the
    various steps .

  • A series of Awareness Camps cum
    Demonstration on the working of the solar
    lighting systems organized in the operational
    areas of branches in association with approved
    vendors of solar lighting systems so as to
    generate demand for the product.

  • Identification and assisting eligible persons
    including all existing customers / housing loan
    borrowers, in installation of solar lighting
    systems.

  • Branches / Offices to highlight the
    advantages of solar lighting systems not only as
    a source of clean energy but also as a viable
    economic proposition to the households and
    commercial establishments.

    means of reducing the cost of electric power need
    to be publicized.

The use of Solar Lighting system has definite
advantages, which are furnished below
  • The system is very simple with very low operating
    / maintenance cost.
  • The power generated can be utilized for domestic
    purposes as well as commercial / community needs
    viz. Street Lighting, Shops and Business
    Establishments, Hostels, Hospitals, operating TV
    etc.

  • Method of installation is simple and the unit is
    easily transportable.
  • Cost of installation is a one-time affair and
    constant supervision is not required. The
    maintenance charge is negligible.
  • The system is free from noise, pollution and
    other hazards.

Purpose
Salient features of GGB Saur Vidyut Scheme
  • To provide loans for purchasing Solar
    Lighting System with necessary accessories
    (conforming to MNRE specifications)

Eligibility
  • Households, small business establishments (micro
    business), hostels, hospitals, restaurants etc.,
    who have an assured source of income for meeting
    the repayment commitments.
  • In case of those in employment, it shall be
    ensured that they have adequate income after all
    deductions for meeting their repayment
    commitments.

Type of Loan
  • Medium Term Loan repayable in 5 years (Priority
    Sector for agriculturists / businessmen and
    Non-priority sector for Salaried persons)

  • The Solar Lighting System is normally sold as a
    package comprising of the following items
  • Solar Photovoltaic panels
  • Tubular batteries
  • Charge controller panel or panel mounting
    assembly
  • Luminaries
  • Internal wiring

  • One percent of the loan amount or Rs.100/-

Credit Sanctioning Powers
  • All loans under this scheme will be
    sanctioned at Branch Level on merits adhering
    to all norms of the Bank judiciously.

Release of loan
  • 50 of the credit facility (value of SLS)
    shall be given to the Supplier against delivery
    of Solar Lighting System and remaining 50 shall
    be given against installation certificate duly
    signed by the customers

Rate of Interest
  • Rate of interest - 11.00 P.A.

Insurance
  • Insurance cover for the units financed is not
    compulsory.

Repayment of Loan
  • The maximum period for repayment shall be 5
    years in convenient monthly / quarterly /
    half-yearly installments.

Implementation of 100 Solar Village Concept
  • Each branch shall identify at least one village /
    colony / ward in their command area which can be
    made 100 Solar Village / colony / ward by
    covering all the households with solar lighting
    systems.
  • A series of awareness camps are to be conducted
    in association with approved dealer/s /
    manufacturer/s to achieve 100 coverage of the
    selected villages in a time bound manner.
  • A few early responders are to be identified and
    persuaded to install solar lighting systems,
    which will create demonstration effect and
    motivate other villages to install solar lighting
    systems.

RECOGNITION/AWARD SCHEME FOR EXPANDINGLENDING

  • Any Branch which finances at least 100 units
    shall be awarded with a Certificate of Merit from
    Area Office.
  • Branch which extends credit under the Scheme to
    250 customers shall be recognized through a
    Certificate Award from Head Office.

  • Three branches from each Region amongst top
    Branches who extend credit facilities to over 250
    customers shall be selected individual
    Certificate will be issued to all staff of the
    Branch.
  • The Branch which covers 100 in a village
    through this GGB Saur Vidyut Scheme shall be
    given special recognition / award through Board
    of Directors of the Bank.

  • Promotion of solar power, as the same is one
    amongst alternative energy sources, is both a
    social cause and also a business proposition for
    the Bank.
  • Therefore, the Branches / Offices have been

Progress under the Scheme
  • Bank has organized more than 60 Awareness/
    Demonstration programmes during 2008-09
    benefiting more than 10000 people.
  • Three villages viz. Gopal Pur in Sonepat
    District, Iqbal Pur in Gurgaon District and
    Ballaycha in Mohindergarh District have been
    declared 100 covered with Solar Home Lighting
  • Bank has so far financed 5306 Solar home Lighting
    systems.
