British Academy (BA)
  • The British Academy is the UKs national academy
    for the humanities and social sciences.  Its
    purpose is to inspire, recognise and support
    excellence and high achievement in the humanities
    and social sciences, throughout the UK and
    internationally, and to champion their role and
    value http//www.britac.ac.uk/
  • General rules
  • Electronic bid system eGAP2 (implemented from
    August 2009) Professor Carlton Cooke is the
    institutional approver all researchers must
    follow the internal bid submission procedures
  • If Principal Investigator (PI) on existing BA
    bid, researchers are NOT eligible to apply for
    another until the conditions are met on the
    existing contract, however as a co-investigator
    (COI) researchers can apply to be a PI or COI on
    a new submission.
  • Postgraduate students cannot apply must be
    post-doctoral level ONLY (must have successfully
    passed viva examination and completed all
    corrections)
  • BA uses Full Economic Costing (FEC) regime (BA
    contribution is 80)
  • Unless stated otherwise, all applications are
    welcome from international scholars providing
    there is a UK-based lead scholar

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • Enable outstanding early career researchers to
    strengthen their experience of research and
    teaching in HE http//www.britac.ac.uk/funding/gui

  • Directly incurred salary costs on host
    institutions local pay scale, commensurate with
    equivalent appointments offering similar duties
    and responsibilities within the host
    institutions own internal pay framework plus
    limited research expenses directly allocated
    costs, including mentors time, and estates, and
    indirect costs.
  • Awards are tenable for three years (not
    renewable) from a starting date normally in
    September or October 2010, and certainly no later
    than 1 January 2011.

  • Electronic bid system using JeS URO is the
    submitter all researchers must follow the
    internal bid submission procedures
  • ESRC uses the FEC regime (ESRC contribution is
    usually 80 unless stated otherwise)
  • Check you meet the criteria of the call you are
    submitting to it will be rejected if its deemed
    ineligible or submitted to the incorrect award

  • Applicants MUST be within 6 years of completion

    researchers with already established national and
    international publications and recognition in
    their field of study.

  • Offered at 2 levels standard research grants
    and small research grants

  • Mid-Career Development Fellowships are intended
    to enable outstanding researchers to develop
    their careers by taking their research in a new

  • Aimed at individuals with between five and
    fifteen years' active postdoctoral or equivalent
    professional experience
  • Potential applicants should note the emphasis on

  • Awards will be made for 2 years
  • Full time or part time awards offered to fit in
    with current research commitments
  • No deadline open call applied for through JeS

Leverhulme Trust
  • Leverhulme has 40 million worth of funding per

  • Provides funding for all disciplines that
    demonstrate originality excluding specialist
    funding beneficiaries i.e. medicine
  • Generally 75 salary costs are covered and 25
    associated costs
  • Does NOT fund core funding or overheads for
    institutions
  • Does NOT use FEC regime (explained in Science and
    Innovation Investment Framework 2004-14
    arrangements for the provision of overheads
    linked to charity funding).
  • Various awards available throughout the year all
    with specific deadlines.

Leverhulme Research Grants Research Projects
  • Financial support for innovative and original
    pieces of research chosen by the researcher

  • Normally awards made up to 250K over two years
  • Between 250K - 500k can be awarded over 5 years
    if compelling evidence is provided
  • Application submission is a 2 stage process
  • Outline can be submitted at anytime through the

    researchers will be invited to submit full
    application by a specified deadline

Leverhulme Research Programmes
  • Invites proposals to two themes identified by the
    trust usually only 1 project is funded under

  • Usually announced in the summer. The themes for
    this year The Impact of Diasporas and Beauty
  • Between 500K 1.75 million
  • Deadline for brief applications is 8 January
    2010, final proposal invitation will be made in
    March 2010, followed up with interviews in July
    2010 and announcement of successful centres /
    groups / individual
  • Usually this is co-ordinated by the URO to
    determine University interest and in-house
    inter-disciplinary collaboration

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships
  • Aim to provide career development opportunities
    for those that are at a relatively early stage of
    their career but with a proven track record in
    research next round available January 2010

  • Fellowship will lead to a more permanent academic
    position
  • Applicants may not hold or held a full time
    established position in the UK
  • Applicants should hold a degree from a UK
    institution by the time taking up the fellowship,
    be under the age of 35 and awarded for either 2
    or 3 years
  • Applicants may, when registered for a doctorate,
    apply only if they have submitted their doctoral
    thesis by the closing date
  • Trust will contribute up to 50 of each
    fellowship total salary costs up to max 23K and
    the balance is to be paid by the host HE, annual
    expenses of 6K may also be requested by the
    applicant
