GLS versus ILS from a Pilots view!
  • Autopilot mode selection requires the same
pilot actions for ILS and GLS approaches.
  • GLS annunciations are identical to those used
    for ILS.
  • Normal and Non-Normal Operations for GLS
approaches are aligned with the Normal and
Non-Normal Operations for an ILS approach.

GLS coupled with RNP
  • Example future procedure.
  • Potentially useful paths
  • (avoid terrain, airspace, weather).
  • RNP based.
  • GLS final segment.

CAT III Certification Autoland Capability
  • BOEING GLS approaches have been demonstrated
    through autoland and rollout.
  • Flight Tests have shown The GLS approach is
even more precise compared to the ILS.
  • To substitute the existing ILS stations (e.g.
in Europe) the CAT III certification is
    absolutely mandatory!

Air Berlins plans for GLS adoption
  • All new Air Berlin Boeing 737 Next Generation
aircraft will be able to conduct GLS Approaches.
  • The Air Berlin GLS Boeing 737 Fleet
  • 10 aircraft at the end of 2009
  • Air Berlin will receive a total of 80 GLS
capable aircraft in the next 5 years.
  • Evaluation Approaches at Bremen and Malaga.
  • Close cooperation with DFS and AENA.
  • GLS introduction and development on Air Berlin
Line operation is given a high project priority
    by Air Berlin Fleet Management.

Bremen GLS Evaluation Phase
  • Air Berlin is approved by the LBA since August
2008 to conduct GLS Evaluation approaches at
    Bremen.
  • Additionally the following constraints by the
    authority must be redeemed
  • GLS Setup Pilot Flying/Pilot Monitoring
  • Pilot Flying (PF) will set the GLS channel.
  • IMC The Pilot Monitoring (PM) will set the ILS
frequency to crosscheck the GLS Signals (Note
Due to Channel/Frequency mismatch the Identifier
on the PFD may appear in amber and the FD bars on
    the PM side may disappear).
  • VMC Outside visual references like PAPI or
Runway may be used by the PM to crosscheck the
    GLS Signals.

Bremen GLS Evaluation Phase
  • Minima
  • The following increased Minima must be used
  • Decision Altitude (DA) 440 feet
  • RVR 650 Meters
  • After the evaluation phase Air Berlin will
receive the full CAT I certification for GLS
    approaches
  • Decision Altitude (DA) 200 feet
  • RVR 550 Meters

Malaga Monitoring flights only!
  • Air Berlin is approved by the LBA since August
2008 to conduct GLS Evaluation approaches at
    Malaga.
  • Additionally the following constraints by the
    authority must be redeemed
  • Pilot Monitoring (PM) will set the GLS channel.
  • Due to the Ground Station prototype system design
Air Berlin is only allowed to monitor the GLS
    Signal by the PM.
  • The PF will set and fly the ILS.
  • The GLS Signal in Malaga is for monitoring
    purposes only!

  • August - November 2008, 100 successful!

Why should an operator (e.g. Air Berlin) support
GLS technology?
  • GLS procedures are identical to ILS procedures
No additional training is required, which
    results in no extra costs!
  • GLS coupled with RNP offers a great range of
new approach procedures, to satisfy Emission
    requirements.
  • Airport upgrading in terms of IFR approach
procedures (e.g. La Palma, MDA 1850 ft.) more
    flexibility, less diversions.
  • Lower maintenance costs for the Ground System
results in lower Airport fees (e.g. Europe).
