Title: Grid Education: Past (EGEE)

1
Grid Education Past (EGEE) future (ICEAGE)
David Fergusson, Deputy Director Training
Outreach Education
2
TOE projects
  • EGEE, EGEE II (EGEE III proposal)
  • European Grid Institute Design Study Proposal
  • UK National Grid Service - NGS 2 recently awarded
  • OMII-Europe (OMII-Europe II proposal)
  • NextGrid
  • ICEAGE (EGEE II proposal)
  • University of Edinburgh, eLearning
  • JISC eLearning
  • JISC Paths to Adoption - recently awarded

3
TOE services
  • Based around digital library to curate material
  • Different project views EGEE, ICEAGE, OMII-EU,
    NGS
  • RSS feeds
  • Multimedia (video/audio/presentations)
  • Community editable metadata
  • eLearning services
  • Online assessment
  • ePortfolios
  • T-Infrastructure integration

4
Teaching Researchers about digital data curation
  • Some disciplines understand metadata - many do
    not
  • Biology vs high energy physics
  • Some disciplines understand the value of
structured data - many do not
  • Just use Google why anything else?
  • libraries dont hold data !
  • More broadly, there is often no awareness of the
    information management issues of federated
    distributed data.
  • Often no awareness of legal/ethical issues
relating to data - or have not yet managed to
    have structured response.

5
Teaching data curators about e-Infrastructure
  • Not interested in underlying technology
  • (and shouldnt need to be)
  • Federated data management solutions - not mature
    yet
  • Collision of new IT architectures and traditional
    services
  • Speed of change
  • Need to understand the integrated effect of many
    new technologies
  • E.g. effects of both distributed and ubiquitous
    computing
  • - iPods and Data Floods.

6
Training requirements
  • Best to take training to the audience -
    ubiquitous
  • Persistency of courses - anytime
  • Account for different background skills
  • Rapid response to rising training demands
  • Experts and trainers under heavy demand
  • Core training team already supporting events all
over Europe and need to train more people within
    the current constraints

9
Infrastructure implementation
  • Develop open source repository - Fedora
  • Storing both metadata and data as managed assets
  • Service-oriented, SOAP-based APIs for
  • Searching and accessing digital objects
    (API-Access)
  • Content management (API-Management)
  • Development includes
  • API developments to return total hits and ranged
    results selection
  • Standardisation of resource access based on the
de facto SRW/U and OpenURL protocols (work in
    progress)

10
Digital Library - resource discovery
  • Resource discovery services building on Fedora
    API
  • Simple and advanced search
  • Browse resource (based on type)
  • Results navigation
  • Extension to the Fedora API to enable filtering
of resources based on distinct type and years
    within a results set
  • Searching external repositories

11
Content metadata management
  • Content management in federated contexts
  • Project partners contributing training materials
  • Enhancing, localising, versioning and exporting
  • Building on the Fedora service API (-M)
  • Creating new and updating metadata/content
  • Wiki services for digital library
  • Metadata Wiki based on W3C XForms (rich user
    interface)
  • Versioning and history
  • Interoperability
  • Exporting objects in e-learning and digital
    library standards
  • Metadata enrichment - reusing existing metadata
