Title: HighEnergy Astroparticle Physics in the US

1
High-Energy Astro-particle Physics in the US
I will try not to repeat what has already been
said, rather fill in additional information and
explain the US situation.

data continuously since 2002. VERITAS Four
Cherenkov telescopes Smithsonian Astrophysical
Observatory and about 20 universities from US,
Canada, Ireland, and UK. Started taking data in
March 2007 with all four telescopes. GLAST
Satellite with gamma ray tracker and calorimeter,
plus GRB monitor US, Italy, Japan, France, Spain,
Sweden, Germany, Launch scheduled 16 May 08

Milagro.means miracle in Spanish.
  • Selected ICRC 07 topics
  • Search for high-energy emission from GRBs
  • None found, limits set
  • A VERITAS search in three areas where MILAGRO has
    found hot spots.
  • VERITAS does not see point sources from the
    MILAGRO areas

175 external 4000 l water tanks with 1 PMT each
surround he pool.
723 PMTs in two layers, 1.5 m and 6m deep in
pool.

telescopes Jan 2007 4 telescopes March 2007
  • Some results from ICRC 07
  • Limits on high-energy flux from 5 GRBs
  • Observations of Pulsar Wind Nebulae
  • TeV and X-ray monitoring of a galactic binary

GLAST Gamma Ray Large Area Space Telescope
Launch scheduled 16 May 2008
GLAST
GLAST has two instruments, the Large Area
Telescope (LAT) and the Gamma ray Burst Monitor
(GBM)
GBM has NaI and BGO detectors

HIGH-ENERGY COSMIC RAYS
HiRes - Two stations of several fluorescence
telescopes in different configurations over the
years at Dugway, Utah. Five US universities, and
one each from Japan and Australia. Took data
from 1997 to 2006 TA 512 plastic scintillation
detectors plus three fluorescence stations in
Millard county south of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Japan plus several US universities and
LANL.Nearly completed construction,
commissioning in progress. TALE TA Low Energy
Infill array and additional fluorescence
(up-looking).In the proposal stage. Auger North
Northern observatory, pairs with Auger South
(covered yesterday). Argentina, Australia,
Bolivia, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany,
Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal,
Slovenia, Spain, UK, US, VietnamAt the RD
Proposal stage. Overall proposal in preparation.

Flys Eye and HiRes pioneered the fluorescence
technique. HiRes stopped data taking in 2006.

TA Status (January 2008)
  • 505 SD deployed and functional
  • 3 FD sites ready and tested
  • 3 communication towers
  • awaiting long range 5.7GHz
  • equipment
  • ETA end of January ? data taking.

TALE Layout Graded FD Graded Array
TA-SD
  • TOWER FD
  • elevation up to 71deg
  • large mirror surface
  • (3 x HiRes)
  • prototype working
  • on Dugway!

TA-FD
TALE-FD
  • TALE FD
  • butterfly FoV for maximal
  • stereo FD with TA (6km)
  • stereo _at_ 1018 eV
  • 10 x HiRes
  • Graded Array
  • - hybrid for TOWER
  • 28 m counters

19
Motivation for TALE is the lower energy region
back to the knee of the spectrum. Same idea as
the HEAT/AMIGA project under construction at
Auger South. Transition from galactic to
extra-galactic cosmic rays.
Proposal for TALE is now in to NSF.
20
Auger North.is proposed for southeast Colorado.
Given the GZK cutoff and the interesting
correlation with AGN directions, it is imperative
to have a large aperture.
Auger South 3000 km2
TA700 km2
The site will use the square mile (1609 m) grid
of landownership and roads. The total area and
layout is not decided. 4032 sq mi 10,440
km23.4Auger South, 5500 sq mi 14,240 km2
4.7 A.S.
21
RD for Auger north has been proposed to US DOE
and NSF (RD has been funded and ongoing in
France and Germany for a few years.) Plan is to
deploy 10 SD detectors and 10 additional
communications stations at the northern site near
Lamar, Colorado. End-to-end tests. HEAT
enhancement at Auger South is RD for Auger North
fluorescence detector
HEAT-like detectors at Auger South will tilt to
allow high elevation and low elevation FOV. HEAT
is mostly a German project. Auger North FDs will
not tilt.
22
RD highlights. (In addition to new tank,
thermal studies, mechanics, etc.)Big change
only one PMT in stead of three per tank. Also,
hilly topography complicates communications? new
scheme.
