Like it is here in Death Valley California.

There can be deep canyons like this.

This Badwater alluvial fan in Death Valley. Flash
flooding sends rivers down the canyons and they
deposit gravels as they enter the low ground.

In the distance is a desert plateau

After heavy rains flash floods occur. These erode
and dissect the plateau. They cut off separate
flat topped hills.
The flat topped hills are called mesas Spanish
for table.

This is a worn down mesa called a butte.
