VisIVO
VisIVO is a visualisation package developed in
collaboration between INAF (Catania Astrophysical
Observatory) and CINECA (the largest Italian
academic supercomputing center) with the specific
object of supporting visualization and analysis
of astrophysical data. Included in the Italian
participation (Trieste, Napoli, Rome and Catania)
to the VO-TECH project.
  • Free Software
  • Cross Platform (Windows and Linux alpha release)
  • N-Dim (gt3) Visualization of Astrophysical data
(lut and glyphs gt scalar properties of each
    element)
  • Point, Volume and Vector Visualization
  • Astrophysical Data Analysis
  • VO (Virtual Observatory) compliance
    (Interoperability VOT, PLASTIC,VizieR)
  • Connects to VizieR 2 Web Service
  • Use External Grid Enabled Web Service Tools
  • (Posters Terrace 1 n. 186 F. Pasian et al,
    n.187 A. Costa et al.)

3
Supported file formats
  • Input- VO-Table- HDF5 Files- Raw Binary
Files- Fits tables, and Volumes (raw grid and
    FITS volume)- ASCII table
  • Output- VO-Table- ASCII table- Raw Binary
  • - Rendering Windows Images

4
Different Visualisations
5
Graphical features2D Visualisation
  • Visualizes data in a plane
  • Supports the same functionalities as
  • the 3D data

Zoom Lookup tabe Algorithms Data selection Picker
op. Interop. etc
6
Graphical features Point Sampler
  • Selects a subset of the points
  • Creates a new object in the application
  • This object supports all the graphical
    functionalities
  • as the original one
  • Sample using a box or ISO-Surface (extract
    cluster)

7
VisIVO main points
  • VizieR data download, cone search
  • Interoperability
  • Vector Visualisation
  • Data Cluster extraction

VisIVO built-in Algorithms
Randomizer extract a random subset of points
Power Spectrum calculate the power spectrum of
a distribution of points Correlation Filter
calculate the correlation function in a point
distribution. Minkowsky Functionals evaluate the
geometry and the topology of a point
distribution Points Splatter distribute (using
Cloud in Cell algorithm) point-scalars on a
regular mesh
16
VisIVO and Desktop Interoperability
  • Makes use of PLASTIC
  • Developed in the VO-TECH project
  • PLASTIC lets the applications talk to each
    other
  • Allows Synchronized actions
  • Interact with the same data in many different
    ways
  • Gives different perspectives of the same data in
    different applications

17
Interop PLASTIC
  • Interoperability with other VO compliant tools
  • PLASTIC
  • Topcat
  • Aladin
  • TabView - A simple Table Viewer
  • VAST - A SIAP access tool that uses Plastic to
    load images in Aladin

18
Interoperability
19
VizieR 2
  • Remote resource containing observational data
  • Perform a cone search in remote sources
  • Reduce the amount of data to work with
  • Download relevant results as VO-Tables

20
Linux porting Alfa version vs. Beta version
  • OpenMAF developed on Fedora Core 2
  • VisIVO developed and fully supported on Debian
    GNU/Linux (Sarge, current stable release)
  • Binaries tested under Fedora Core 4
  • tar.gz with raw binaries installation package
    available
  • Ported all the functionalities currently
    available on the Windows platform
